Looking at the Past

One of the really neat things about ds106 is the ability to look at past “ds106ers” work (thanks to blogland) and to see their creativity come out through their work.

This week current ds106ers are to look at two digital storytelling pieces from former students and reflect upon them. We have to pick one piece from in[SPIRE] and another piece from the “best works of last semester’s students”

I looked at a bunch of submissions on in[SPIRE] and ultimately decided upon this one.

Screen shot from in[SPIRE]

I had to do some research, but I found out that a former DS106er Candice (From Spring 2012) submitted this picture. (I took a screenshot of it, so I could include it in the blogpost.)

When I first saw it, I literally laughed out loud. Now I haven’t actually seen this movie, but I know the premise of it. I know many girls think that Channing Tatum is hot stuff, so I think that if this was a real life situation, many girls would be saying– Why question this situation?! (Me? I’m more of a Ryan Gosling/Jake Gyllenhaal fan ;) )

To me, this is a digital story because its a poster for a movie (which is clearly a digital story), but the poster itself is a digital story because Candice’s added line of “If Channing Tatum says you are married, just go with it” starts a story within my head. Like I said, I’ve never seen the movie, but that line alone creates a picture in my mind of what’s the movie is about and how it could possibly play out.

Clearly this poster is a part of a larger story– the movie. It gives you a glimpse of what the film could be about. By the title alone, one could probably decide it’s about a marriage/vow to some. It’s a “chick-flick” and this character (Rachel McAdams) is questioning her marriage to Channing Tatum’s character.

Next up I chose the Best Work of Lauren. She chose her Character/Genre Mashup as her best work of the semester. Prior to watching her video, I read through the post and it’s clear that she put a ton of time and effort into the project. After watching the video (which is totally amazing) I completely understand why she said this was her best work! It’s totally awesome and I had to share it with you all!

Background info: She took the song “My Boo” by Usher and Alicia Keys and put all different movie/TV couples to the song! It’s really cool and I love it! Here’s the video for you to enjoy :)

I loved the range of characters she used: from classics like Scarlett and Rhett from Gone with the Wind to Zach and Kelly from Saved by the Bell. I consider this digital storytelling because Lauren used a love song and couples to show their “on-screen” love and story. Behind each and everyone of the characters shown in the video, there is a deeper story that unfolds, for good or bad. The characters she used are probably one that we all know and love. People (including me) get really invested into love relationships on TV shows or Movies and we end up loving or hating them. I think Lauren did a really great job portraying the love these characters have for one another, and the use of this song was perfect!

PS: I did intentionally pick all these romantic pieces, they just happened to be my favorites and maybe I was already in a “romantic” frame of mind after writing up my post on How to Lose a Guy in 10 days
