What is Foley?

According to dictionary.com:

Fo·ley

[foh-lee]

adjective

of or pertaining to motion-picture sound effects produced manually: a Foley artist.
Origin:
after Jack Foley,  sound-effect pioneer at Universal Pictures in the 1930s
———————————-

The past week or so working on this project has been veeeeeeerrrry time consuming for me.  Figuring out what is going to make a particular sound is not nearly easy as it might sound.

Example:  I needed to make the sound of a woman fainting to the ground.

Sounds easy right?

Heh.

1.  Grab my recorder. ( I am using this SONY recorder)

2.  Turn it on.

3.  Hold it and pretend to faint.

4.  Listen to the results.

5.  say WHAAAAT?? when it sounds nothing like it should.

6.  Try again.

I ended up using the sound of an apron dropping onto a soft chair for the fainting/falling sound.  I can’t even remember how I decided to try that, it was like 3 days of figuring out the fainting.

Here is the video I was “foley-ing” (not a word)

I did sounds for 1:31-2:00

Here is my ‘foley-ism” (another made up word) after hours, upon days of working, finding, cutting and editing!

—————————–

I have a newfound respect to the nth degree for foley artists.  Artists who use what they have on hand to make appropriate noises, sounds and effects happen.

There is an interesting interview with Foley Artist Dean Minnerly here, on HOT NERD GIRL blog.

IMDB loves Dean Minnerly too.
