What is Remix?

The first reference I checked out was Everything is a Remix Part I by Kirby Ferguson, which showed how remix evolved mainly through music.  He begins by stating the definition of remix as a way “to combine or edit existing materials to produce something new.”  This is essentially how I would’ve defined it as well, albeit phrased much less elegantly, but his idea that basically everything is a remix stuck out to me as something pretty profound.

The second reference was A Fair(y) Use Tale discussed copyright laws through a remix of Disney films.  I liked how it was done in a remix form as a parody to show copyright issues, but it was kind of hard for me to follow and pay attention.  Either way, it successfully got the point across.

The three examples I chose to further look at remix were Star Trek Meets Monty Python, The Shining Recut, and Scary Mary.  The Star Trek was different in that the audio was directly dubbed over, whereas the other two were the same film, just altered to give a different meaning to the trailer.  All three were examples of remix though because they edited the original version in order to create a new production.

Pretty much my explanation came from the first reference I checked out, and then thought about the examples I looked at as well in trying to come up with an idea on the spot.
