Way Back Time Machine

Using the Way Back Time Machine website on Internet Archive, take screen shots of a favorite website overtime.  Then, look at how the website has changed for better and worse.  Blog about what makes a website effective and how that changes. See some examples of sites like McDonald’s and Best Buy as they looked in 1996 https://www.msu.edu/~karjalae/internet96.htm?hoho

This is a 2 star assignment.

For this assignment I decided to use Youtube. Here are 5 screen shots (using Jing) during various times in past years.  It’s really interesting how a website can change so much in just a few years.  Youtube started up in March of 2005, so it’s been around for only about 7 years.  Being a fairly recent website still doesn’t mean that it’s changed a lot since then.  The screen shots I got from the Way Back Time Machine were from 2005, 2006, 2008, 20and 2010.  For the 2012 screen shot I went to the current homepage of youtube.

2005: This picture looks like it was from youtube before it became popular.  There is just really a log in screen and not any videos on the front of the main homepage like there are today.

2006: This screen shot from 2006 looks like youtube has improved greatly since 2005.  It has become more well known and actually has videos uploaded to it.  There are a lot of different tabs with different categories in it and there is also a tag cloud on this, where people can see what videos are being tagged as.  There is also a search at the top where it looks like you can search through different kinds of videos.

2008: In 2008 by this screen shot it looks like youtube has gotten rid of it’s tag cloud (that’s understandable because youtube gets many tags) as well as at lot of the tabs that were at the top in 2006.  The site is more organized and does not have much clutter than the 2006 version.

2010:  In 2010 youtube was more of what we were used to until they changed to what we are currently seeing on youtube in 2012.

2012 (today):  Today youtube is very well known.  And you can find videos of just about anything on it.  It is easy with your account to favorite and like videos on youtube.  If you are logged into your youtube account through google it will automatically come up with videos of people you are subscribed to on youtube.  But if not it gives you the most recent and most popular videos that are on youtube at the moment.
