The Shape of Stories

First off, this is an incredibly obnoxious, ridiculous, simpleton version of stories to the point that it makes the point that storytelling becomes redundant.  I disagree, although there have been studies that have suggested that there are only thirty-two plots to any story in existence.  I also completely disagree with this concept because of the immense differences in characters, character flaws, antagonists, settings, genres, etc. that make a nearly endless amount of plot options.  Now that my English major rant is over with, on to a story.

Because The Hobbit is on my mind I’ll go with that.  The book begins at a middle level, where everyone just exists.  Dwarves then come and the mood goes down because Bilbo is upset and very unhappy.  Then they go out on an adventure and they’re all happy and excited about going out to get their money.  Then they cross the river and are attacked by trolls, where they are again unhappy.  Then they are happy again when they reach Rivendell.  This process is repeated over and over again as they cross different bodies of water (unhappy) and then cross another where they arrive at a safe haven in some type of hall (happy), be it elven, the hall of Beorn, the hall of the Eagles, etc.

In retrospect, this assignment was hard to express without a visual element.  But if i had to describe it, it would look like a graph of cos(x)=y.  If you don’t know what that looks like, get a calculator and figure it out.

Here’s another story for you all.

I chose this because it’s a youtube video, therefore digital, and a story.  A very bad one.  Also all I could think of at the time.
