This American Life: Episode 339 The Breakup

Listening to the episode of This American Life really put into perspective how much work goes into creating a radio show.  The whole show was a constant bombardment of sound that I have learned to appreciate through creating my own sound clips through audacity. Rarely did the show only rely on one source of sound, such as someone talking, there was either interactions between speakers or sound clips rising up behind the speakers voice.  The show’s topic itself, I felt, was a really interesting point of discussion.  Incorporating the common experience of breakups with the well time insertion of sappy breakup songs creates a completely relatable subject that most listeners can identify with.  Starlee Kine the main subject of the show discusses her recent break up with ex-beau Anthony.  Her discussions Phil Collins and struggle to write the perfect sad love song pinpoint the humor that is part of these low points of life.  Everything for her unique voice to perspective on life drew the listeners in to learn more about this poor girl and her story and will she ever be happy again? The background noises at the beginning that take the viewer into the environment that the show wants to create.  So on point with their sound editing helps to envision the world that is surrounding Starlee at this point in her life.  Knowing how much goes into creating these sounds allowed me to appreciate the craft that these people have perfected.  They rely on sound enable the listener to visualize this place theyre depicting.  Great topic, interesting characters and great sound editing make this show a quality production in my eyes.
