Sigma Tau Delta Induction!

Today April 11th 2012 at 4 pm was my English honor society induction.  Not going to lie, but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. I initially thought to myself, big whoop, I am in English honor society.  However, after the ceremony I have to admit I am very proud of myself and all of my fellow peers who have been inducted.  We have worked so, so hard.  We have worked until our breaking points.  Especially this last year, I have never had so much school work to do in my life.

I love when people tell me that being an English major isn’t hard.  ”It’s an easy subject.”  Oh, really?  Reading theories, attempting to keep up with novels from classics to YA is easy?  Learning how to keep up with technology is easy?  Learning how to teach and reach students that have different backgrounds is easy?  I beg to differ.  If anything, I believe we have one of the hardest majors.  Literacy is changing.  It is not just print anymore.  I have to learn how to be literate across the board because according to theorists, everything is a text and can be read.  I’d love to see those who find my future job easy do it because I am sure they would take back what they said very quickly.

What I just went into a rant about reminds me of Taylor Mali’s slam poem, “What Teachers Make.”  Watch here- I am sure he would agree with what I said above!

Doing well is and always has been very important to me.  I believe I am too hard on myself at times, but whatever I am doing is working I guess.  So, everyone, do well in school!
