    The Summation

    by
To end the semester I: did the The Grand Finale: this changed from my original proposal because once I starting making the projects I just wanted to go with the next thing that popped into my head. I like how it turned out, I think it tells the most detailed story I have told this semester, and flows very well. In week 3 I wrote the Definition of Digital Storytelling to me. I still agree with my definition, generally digital storytelling is was way to share stories through various media’s to a large audience. I made two assignments, two tutorials and suggested two daily creates which you can find in my Creations category Best ...

    The Grand Finale

    by
My grand finale has a few parts: Part 1 My story starts with a girl, named Eliza, who is soon to graduate from college. She, like most other college girls, is looking at her Pinterest in hopes the answers to all her finals will magically be “pinned” . She is looking at the Travel section and searched Italy. She HAS to go! Part 2 Eliza really wants to go to Italy, but how will she pay for an extravagant trip right out of college. Her parents have been pressuring her about applying for jobs and finding an edge to be noticed above her peers, what could make them think wasting a few ...

    Post Card from Paradise

    by
Greetings from ds106 “Tell us where you are, where you’re from, or simply where you’d rather be and build a greeting card.” Part 3 Being the good daughter she is, Eliza sent her parents a post card from paradise filling them in on her amazing trip. The back says: “Mom and Dad, I am having the best time. I picked up this post card outside the Pantheon, and sat down outside to enjoy the sunshine and culture. Rome is a huge city, luckily their subway only has 2 lines, so it’s not too hard to get where you’re going. Can’t wait to see you when I get home, and start ...

    Capture the Moment

    by
Screen Capture Story “get footage of something you do on your computer that tells a story.”   This is part 3 to my final story. Part 2 Eliza has shown her parents the Newsweek and they bought it! They are buying her tickets to her Italian adventure as a graduation present. Part 4 I made this video by downloading CaptureMe and taking a series of 10 second screen recordings. Then I combined the recordings with iMovie.

    Newsweek Provokes Need

    by
Mocking Up A Newsweek Cover “Make up a Newsweek cover. You may design this in such a way as to satirize the topic, or Newsweek, or both. You must select a powerful image and a pithy title.” Here is my cover  This is part two of my final story. Part 1 Eliza really wants to go to Italy, but how will she pay for an extravagant trip right out of college. Her parents have been pressuring her about applying for jobs and finding an edge to be noticed above her peers, what could make them think wasting a few weeks in Italy would be worth their money.. a Newsweek cover ...

    by
Storytelling within the Web “the idea of changing up an existing web page to tell a new story ” you will be intervening in the code and design of a website of your choice to tell a story. You are not to photoshop the design of the site, but rather intervene in the actual html and CSS of the site—though you can photoshop particular images on the site. Essentially you alter the content of a web page (content, images) to make it tell a new story.” You can see my site here This is part one to my final story: My story starts with a girl, named Eliza, who is soon to ...

    Tutorials, Assignments and TDC

    by
I suggested 2 daily creates: Photography- Take a picture incorporating as many of your favorite things as possible. (people, places, colors, foods, ect..) Drawing- Recreate a childhood photo I have tutorials in my Immaturity at its Finest post, and my Sleepy Kitty post and submitted the visual assignment Today’s a GIFt, in which you make a GIF using pictures from a day in your life, and the design assignment Ink, in which you design a tattoo using design elements we learned in design week. I am the only one that has done my assignments, and I don’t think I would change anything as of yet, besides the size of the GIF ...

    Ink

    by
Ink “Design a tattoo that includes good examples of at least 2 design element we learned about”   I drew: This design shows typography, balance and dominance. I love to quote “all things must change” it’s always true, it may be the only thing that does not change, if you can wrap your head around that … Everything is always growing, changing, evolving, and it always will be for as long as we live. Change is inevitable, and though seen negatively I think it is positive. Stagnant would be boring and every change brings a new opportunity or lesson. I made this by drawing it, scanning it and uploading it ...

    Today’s a GIFt

    by
Today’s a GIFt “Create a GIF of at least 3 things you’ve done in a day, it can be a mundane day of things like waking up, going to school and watching tv, or an exciting day when you won an award, accomplished something you’ve been working towards, or traveled somewhere new.” A made a GIF of a day in Rome: make animated gifs like this at MakeAGif I made this assignment! This is a day in Rome.. I think… the days kind of run together so maybe it was two days, but I went to the Catacombs, the Colosseum and ended the day with a nice flaming shot at ...

    Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

    by
Recycle the Media “ mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content”   I got my media from here to create Serene Scenes of Fredericksburg: When looking through to recycled media I tried to find a theme, and the most obvious one to me was scenes of Fredericksburg. Then I found the sound clip of birds chirping and thought that would fit well in a video … Continue reading →

    Smokey the Bears

    by
Mashedup Children’s Book “Mashup a children’s book based on another cultural artifact.” I decided to mash the Bearenstain Bears with Smokey the Bear in a children’s book cover: I made this remix by finding a picture of the Bearenstain Bears on google (which I referanced above) uploading it in Picasa, editing it with the Picnik software in Picasa to create the flames and fire hose and then adding the text with the Picasa editor. When I saw this assignment in the assignment bank I liked the examples on the college humor website but had trouble thinking of a childrens book and cultural artifact to mash up myself.. so I googled children’s … Continue reading →

    McLovin’

    by
Consumer Mashup “Think of anyplace you spend money, and what you most often buy at that place. “ I mashed McDonalds logo and it’s delicious coffee: I LOVE the mornings I can get myself out of bed 5 minutes early to stop at McDonald’s for coffee before class. I’ve never been much of a caffeine junky, but this semester I think I’ve entered adulthood and needed it more mornings then not. I made this mash up by finding the McDonalds logo and coffee through google (links above) putting both pictures in Microsoft Word, changing the M’s settings to be behind text and the coffee settings to be in front of text. … Continue reading →

    RemixThis

    by
I watched Everything is a Remix Part 1 about Led Zeplin’s attempted remixing, which I found out was more copying then remixing. Zeplin did not give credit to original artists, and did not make fundamental changes in order to be able to claim the media was there own. They were sued Then I watched Everything is a Remix Part 3 which says everyone must copy in the beginning in order to ground ourselves in the fundamentals. Most great inventions are not completely original ideas, they are a continuum of ideas building on each other, remixes! The end of the video was most interesting to me. It gave a number of examples in … Continue reading →

    Final Project Proposal

    by
Originally I thought taking Thanksgiving break completely off from all work was a good idea. Then I re-entered the real world on Monday completely behind in most of my classes!! I missed the proposal deadline , but I’m back now and ready to propose some ideas! I have decided my focus is going to be Italy, I went there last spring and have already included it in some of my projects but have plenty more to create and elaborate on. The assignments I think I am going to do will be… Web: Storytelling within the Web, What they would have done in Social Media; Visual: Flashing Neon GIF, Optical Illusion; Audio: Spring … Continue reading →

This week I did 16 stars of Video Assignments: Framed Hitch Cut Supercut Funny Guy Red Visualized I liked the video weeks, once I got the hang of iMovie the most challenging part was finding clips on youtube, which isn’t so bad. iMovie was pretty user friendly, I just had to either drag and drop still frames or upload videos, I think I have the basics down.

    Framed

    by
Framed two stars “Take a 2 minute video and go through the frames until you find the one that best represents the overall story of your video.” I choose to use this trailer for the Pursuit of Happyness: and I think this frame sums up the trailer and movie in general: This scene is when Will solves a Rubiks Cube after the man in the car with him tells him he can’t, which is a pretty major theme in the movie. You can do anything you set your mind to and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I made this frame by finding a Pursuit of Happyness trailer on youtube, and … Continue reading →

    The Hitch Cut

    by
Do the Hitch Cut 4 stars “Make two versions of a shortthree-shot video — in each instance maintaining the first and third shots, but changing out the second shot in each. Can you get a completely different result from your viewer? “ This video shows that emotions are can be interpreted in many ways. This first take of this video the guy sees a puppy learning to walk, then he makes an expression looking awed by the cuteness. The next take the guy sees a huge body builder and his same expression looks intimidated and fearful. I don’t think this example is as good as the one in the assignment description, but … Continue reading →

    Will Ferrell Supercut

    by
Supercut It five stars “Create a supercut montage of overused dialogue, themes, motifs, filmmaking techniques, etc. for a particular character, tv show, film, and/or public figure.” I decided to “supercut” clips of Will Ferrell being overly dramatic. For this assignment the first thing I thought of after reading overused themes was Will Ferrell. He is the same character is EVERY movie he’s in! He can be funny but its always the same tactic, being over dramatic in average situations. The montage is just a few scenes of many, I’m sure you can think of others. To make the montage I searched for clips of Will on youtube, downloaded them via PwnYouTube … Continue reading →

    Funny Guy

    by
One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds 3 Stars “Create a five second video of one archetype from five different movies cutting together one second of each.” I choose to use Funny Guys as my archetype: For this project I choose the archetype funny guys, These 5, Jonah Hill, Steve Carrell, Will Ferrel, Michael Cera and Zach Galifainakis are definitely my favorites. They are a certain type of funny, witty seemingly without having to try. The audio is a clip on Zach laughing in one of my favorite movies, Due Date. I made the video by googling images of all of the guys, dragging those photos to iMovie, recording the audio from … Continue reading →

    Red Visualized

    by
Song Visualization 2 stars “Pick a song (or a minute from a song) and create a video that displays a picture representing the lyrics” I choose to visualize the song Red by Taylor Swift: This song was pretty easy to visualize, the analogies in the lyrics are pretty straight forward in describing the intended visuals. I went with a pretty literal theme. To make the video I google searched for the pictures I wanted(links below), saved them to my desktop, dragged them into a new project in iMovie. Then I uploaded the song from iTunes and had to adjust the length of time the pictures were on the screen by right … Continue reading →

    Next Weeks Video Assignments

    by
Next week I want to try Joining the Conversation there is only one example of it so far an that one wouldn’t open for me, but the assignment seems pretty well explained. I think I may use the end of the clip Protect Your Dreams which I have downloaded, and probably replace Jaden’s lines to make the scene a little lighter, but I still need to come up with witty new dialogue and record it. I am also going to try the One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds assignment. I already have my archetype: misunderstood teens, my 5 characters and a sounds clip from the breakfast club, the ultimate misunderstood teen movie. I looked at … Continue reading →

    Some More Pursuit of Happyness

    by
3 bits of info about the making of the movie: Wiki says: -The movie is based on the true story of Chris Gardner‘s one year struggle with homelessness - Jaden Smith, Will’s actual son play’s Chris’ son in the movie -”Gardner makes a cameo appearance in the film, walking past Will and Jaden in the final scene. Gardner and Will acknowledge each other; Will then looks back at Gardner walking away as his son proceeds to tell him knock knock jokes.” This is a Drama film, which fits the description; “Dramas are serious, plot-driven presentations, portraying realistic characters, settings, life situations, and stories involving intense character development and interaction. Protect Your Dreams

    by
I watched the video Protect Your Dreams: Video only review: This clip starts in a kitchen. Will is standing in the background to the left while Jaden is sitting in the right foreground. The lighting is dim. Then there is a cut to the Will and Jaden at a basketball court on an overcast day, dim lighting which seems to mirror the characters moods. This frame is a straight on angle, zoomed out. Will is on the left and Jaden is on the right. The next frame is a cut to a close up of Will’s back. Jaden runs out from behind Will to the left. The next frame zooms … Continue reading →
