    DS106Radio experiance

    by
I listened to DS106radio for the first time today. When I logged Alan was talking to someone about a neighborhood that they were comparing to Bangkok, it was obviously mid conversation so I was trying to put the pieces together missing the first half of the story. Then I tweeted : listening to #ds106radio #ds106 — Amelia Lord (@amlordd) September 23, 2012 and Alan gave me a shout out… Thanks for the shoutout @cogdog — Amelia Lord (@amlordd) September 23, 2012 …and filled me in on who he was speaking to, Scott Low who is teaching in Saudi Arabia (which is probably why his sound was braking up throughout the ...

    “Eat Cake”

    by
I listen to the audio story “Eat Cake.” Having little experience even listening to audio stories I thought it was great, just because it kept my interest. I then listened to Howsound’s “Dissecting Joanne Rosser, Papermaking” and figured out what makes me like this story and how it keeps my interest. Eat Cake starts with immediate action and layered sounds. A lot is going on, the cat is purring and meowing, while Elizabeth is talking to it, then this track quiets (but is still audible) while Elizabeth begins the introduction.  The next “paragraph” starts by a third layer of audio, music starting to play while she talks about her Valentines ...

    Audio Storytelling, from the experts

    by
So I just watched the four part series of “Ira Glass on Storytelling” (2, 3, 4), where Ira Glass, gives what he thinks are the things you need to know when starting audio storytelling (broadcasting). He seemed to have four main points, one in each video: First- Audio storytelling has 2 main building blocks: -The Anecdote: A sequence of actions -with “Bait” -raising questions from the beginning and answering them along the way -The moment of reflection: the point of the story Second- Finding a great story takes time, be strong enough to “abandon the crap”, failure is a big part of success Third- If you want to be and audio ...

    To sum it up..

    by
Week three was a lot of blog posts: First was a post about Storytelling, since writing that post I think I would add that digital storytelling may be left more to interpretation, looking at many of the inspire posts it seemed that the stories could mean a variety of things where oral and written stories and further explained. Then I had a post about the shape of Little Red Riding Hood, based on Kurt Vonnegut’s speech about the shape of stories. Vonnegut’s theory is a very interesting way to analyze stories, it shows the timeline and mood (which seems to be based on the main characters perception) of the introduction, body ...

    Inspiration

    by
Since DS106 is a community of digital storytellers, it is fun to go back and look at past works other people have made to inspire future work, or to just look at in amazement. I choose to blog about a poster made my Keelin in Spring 2012. Original Post I love everything about the poster, the colors, the simplicity, the patterns, the mystery behind the message.. pretty much everything. It stood out to me because, obviously I really like it and at this point I would have no idea where to begin to make something like it. In the post, the steps are explained and it was made in photoshop, which ...

The Shape of Little Red Riding Hood

    by
This week I watched Kurt Vonnegut’s video explaining the “shape” of stories. He has invented a graph which he explains in the video, very sarcastically. The vertical axis is a measurement of happiness the bottom being complete unhappiness and the top being bliss. The horizontal axis is a measurement of time; beginning to end of the story. I’m going to analyze the shape of Little Red Riding Hood. I think this is a story I think most people know but if you have forgotten here’s a little refresher: click here This graph shows what I think the shape of Little Red Riding Hood is: (events numbered and labeled below) The top got ...

    Storytelling

    by
If I defined storytelling in my own words I would say it’s: an expression of events told with presenter bias, directed at a general or specified audience. Storytelling doesn’t make me think of specific images, people, places or sounds because it’s very broad and can entail almost anything; real, imaginary, exciting, boring, detail, generalizations, it depends on the storyteller. When adding digital to the word storytelling I think the definition becomes slightly more specific, I think the definition would then become: an expression of events told with presenter bias through digital medias, directed at a larger, possibly online audience. I think storytelling in general is usually presented to known audiences, while ...

    Week Two

    by
This week was DS106 Bootcamp Week 2! We had quite a list of assignments starting with doing three daily creates… The first one I choose to do was posted on Monday, the assignment was to take a picture of the great outdoors: I took this picture a few years ago at Lake of the Woods in Souix Narrows, Ontario. My family goes there every few years because my mom is Canadian and our family has a cabin on the lake. I love the symmetry and reflection of the clouds on the water. What a perfect day on the lake, I need to go back again soon. My second daily create was ...

    Immaturity at it’s finest

    by
My assignment was to make a gif from my favorite movie. My favorite movie of all time is Uptown Girls… I need to watch it again soon actually. Uptown girls is a movie about a woman that needs to grow up and a kid that needs to learn how to have fun, and how they help each other understand the world. This gif is a few clips from the ending, a dance recital where Ray (Dakota Fanning, who I feel like grew up really quickly between this movie and twilight) does a dance dedicated to Molly (Brittany Murphy). Some back story: Molly’s dad was a rock star that died in ...

    Creative Commons: Some Rights Reserved

    by
So, my latest assignment for DS106 was the figure out what Creative Commons are… I started my research the same way most students these days would, googling (which I hear is considered an actual verb now) “Creative Commons.” The first site I found was CreativeCommons.org, perfect! So, I learned first that all work you produce automatically has an “all rights reserved” copyright, meaning if other people would like to use that work they must gain explicit permission. In some cases creators do want “all rights reserved,” but on the internet many people want to share their ideas and see how others can add, improve, or just make use of those ...

    Week One

    by
Digital Storytelling bootcamp this week was slightly intimidating on Monday. I just got back in town, I’m trying to finalize my schedule, and get my books, and set up my apartment, this is supposed to be syllabus week! I tried to jump right in an...

    My Keys

    by
Here is my first daily create! It is an explanation of the keys on my keychain. I never thought about the story your keys can tell about yourself. I have my car key, which goes to my bright blue ford focus, my baby that I just finished paying off. Then I have a key to my dad’s house that I was born and raised in, moving to college was the first time I had ever not lived in that house. Then the key to, my best friend, Michelle’s house. It is actually her birthday today.. too bad she’s four hours away right now :/ and lastly I have a key ...
