Week 6 Story critique– something different

    by
Why Storytelling Matters: A TedX Talk by Garr Reynolds   Each week in Learning with Digital Stories we are supposed to evaluate and critique a digital story. For this week though, I decided to do something different, I hope that’s OK and if it’s not, Oh well it’s too late I’ve already done it! This week I was looking at YouTube and searching for digital stories and I noticed that there were many results in which people were talking about digital stories, or how to make digital stories, or the

Week Five Personal Reflection: Stumbles and Surprises

    by
These past two weeks definitely presented opportunities for me to learn new things, fail a little, and figure some things out. First off, the daily creates from DS106. For these assignments I really have no idea what I'm doing! But, I think I've done a good job of doing the best I can and posting anyway, even if I was unsure of myself. For week four I created a meme and for this week, five, I used the app, Giphy, to post a gif to Twitter. I learned something in week four that probably should

    CARP in Webinars

    by
For my course, Webinars and Synchronus Learning, we are discussing design principles. We have talked a lot about the CARP method:   Contrast Alignment Repetition Proximity   This really came in handy when I read about it because I immediately took a look at my own website (this one!) and realized that I wasn't exactly following this method... The one that really stood out to me was contrast. Contrast simply means difference. Every element of the design process such as line, shapes, colors,

    Week 5 Story Critique

    by
For this week’s story critique, I chose “Dear Grandma” by Matt MacArthur. I was searching YouTube for digital stories and came across this one. Previously I had only searched within the suggested websites but decided to just search blindly on YouTube to see what was out there! “Dear Grandma” features a man’s voice speaking about his grandmother. It begins with him stating that he was thinking about her and her funeral when he was 11 years old. It goes on to tell interesting facts about his

    Chapter 3 New Literacies

    by
For Chapter Three of New Literacies I found myself looking up many terms and definitions. One of the words that really stood out to me was folksonomy. Folksonomy is defined as a system in which users tag online items to aid in searching for and finding those items. I realized after looking up the definition that I knew what it was but not what it was called. As a newer user of various social media tools like Twitter and Flickr, this concept is new to me and I am still figuring it all out. I

    Week 5 Daily Create

    by
I happened to get up early and noticed that today's daily create was to create a GIF for someone's birthday. The preference was to use a picture of a dog. Even though I didn't know the person for whom we were celebrating I jumped at the chance to make a gif since that on my list of things I don't know how to do :) I downloaded the app, "Giphy" and scrolled through looking for a dog. This Corgi playing the piano was quite cute and I thought it would be perfect for him to be learning to play

    Week 4 Story Critique

    by
For this week’s story critique, I chose “Fences” by Emily Love from the Story Centre. In it Emily talks about crossing the border into Tijuana and being told not to get out of the car because she is pregnant. She speaks about the children she sees playing and how happy they were. They didn’t know they were playing in the runoff from an abandoned battery plant. She is told to stay in the car because the air is contaminated and possibly harmful to her and her baby. The story utilizes personal

    Week Three Video Assignment

    by
In Learning with Digital Stories I had to choose an assignment from the "Video" catagory in the assignment bank in DS106. I chose the assignment, "Write a Letter to Your 16 Year Old Self." I've never used the video option on my computer and I've never done an assignment like this! So here's my video and my letter to 16 year old Kristin.

    Daily Create Week Four

    by
For this week's daily create I chose "Code of the Cowpoke" or rules of cowboys/girls. For some reason the thought of coming up with rules/advice/words of wisdom Yoda immedately came to mind. So I created a meme with Yoda!

My pets are my kids, focal theme response.

    by
For this week’s focal theme response, I chose two articles that look at opposite sides of the same argument. I chose two because, well they are both very short but also because they dive into a subject that is near and dear to my heart: pets.   Over twelve years ago I adopted a little Yorkie named Haley. She has changed my life in more ways than I can count. So last year when they vet called and told me they needed me to come in, the little lump on her belly was not what they thought, I

Week Three Personal Reflection: Snow Days

    by
It would be impossible for me to reflect on this week and not talk about snow days. Snow days bring the kind of joy you only experienced as a child. I immediately remembered the best snow days I had as a child, my father woke me and told me I was late for school. I started scrambling all over the room trying to get ready but then he pulled up the blinds and there it was in all it's glory: snow, there was so much. We didn't get a whole lot of snow where I grew up on the southern NJ coast. It's

    Week Three Story Critique

    by
For this week’s story critique, I looked more closely at the categories or themes on the Story Center website. This week I looked into Identity section and selected a story. I thought this category would be a great place to start this week since I have identified my focal theme as motherhood. I chose a story called “Love Child” by Malaika Pettigrew. In the story, Malaika narrates a story in which all three of her children ask the same question, Why can’t we be white? This makes her think of her

    Chapter Two Critique

    by
Chapter Two: Literacies: practice, Discourse, and encoded texts (Due 2/5)     After reading Chapter Two of New Literacies the definition of Literacy started to become more clear. With something as complicated and dynamic as literacy I notice that the definition will probably evolve over time and become more and more clear as the reading goes on. The definition that I noted at the beginning of the chapter was: Literacy is the socially recognized ways in which people generate, communicate, and

    Critique a Webinar Activity

    by
For my Webinars and Synchronus Learning class, INTE 5670, we had to find, attend, and critique a webinar. Below, find my thoughts and things I learned after I attended this webinar. Webinars are new to me, I've only attended one webinar prior to this one!    Critique a Webinar Activity   I attended a webinar on January 20, 2016 at 5:30 (PST) called “Foster Care Adoption.” I didn’t choose this webinar at random as I had signed up for it prior to the spring semester beginning for personal reasons.
