Over break I went to visit my best friend Danielle, who is abroad for the entire year in London. While I was in New York, I got to visit Theodore Roosevelt’s home, Sagamore Hill. The downfall to this visit was that it was on New Year’s day, so the place was closed for tours. The funny thing is that it didn’t stop us from having a great time. If anything, it made it all the better. We peeked into windows and experienced his mass collection of animals through gaps in curtains. It sounds sketchy, I know, but sometimes not fully knowing or seeing lets your imagination wonder. So what did I get out of his home? Roosevelt loved to hunt, has a cheetah, arched a pathway with elephant tusks and has a huge polar bear rug in his living room. I remember seeing a deer and a moose at some point but it may be my imagination getting the best of me. The emptiness of the place made it possible for me and D.Gersh to sit on the rocking chairs and just enjoy the cold, the snow on the ground, the view and each other’s company. She won’t be back for another five months now, but in the mean time, I’m left with a great memory of the time I saw her last.
