Pop and Culture

“What is Pop Culture”

Easy. The homework for Tuesday’s class. Nah, I’m kidding. To be honest it’s all there in the name. ‘Pop’ for ‘Popular’ and Culture. Ah but maybe that’s the trouble? What Culture? My Culture? You’re Culture? That’g guys Culture over there….

There are so many Cultures in this world and in this case it’s just the Culture of everything that is Popular! So think about it? What’s Popular in our time and age?

Here’s a prime example. Internet speak. Go on Facebook, Forums, Myspace and look at all the comments. Somehwere in there you’re definately bound to find something like this

‘Lol’ ‘smh’ ‘rofl’ These are all acronyms used to express action through the internet:

Lol being Laugh out loud,
smh; shaking my head and
rofl; rolling on the floor laughing.

of course there are other variations but let’s keep it simple, shall we?

These acronyms are quite literally everywhere. I doubt you’ve ever written an e-mail or passed some kind of text through the net without using something similar.

Popular Culture is deemed as whatever is popular with the majority of the culture. It’s something simple that just about everyone can understand. Whatever is ‘hip’ or ‘in’ if you will. So you may see it in something like a movie. Or for a better example…

Ever seen South Park? South Park is riddled with Popular Culture references. Sit through one of those and your bound to laugh your tail off at one of the many comical inserts added in there.

If you still don’t quite get it, here’s a quick and easy prime example in which South Park references to the take over of Teen Artist Justin Bieber in the Pop Music World.

You may know that while theres a huge Justin Bieber fan following, there are also a number of people who ‘hate the poor guy’.

The Most Evil Opponent Clip

Did you get it?

if not, then why not try checking out this video by Trey Songz. The title is ‘Lol Smiley Face’
and references to the popular use

‘lol :)’

in text/internet speak

How about now? Do you get it?

Essentially Pop Culture is whatever is trending. In media it’s usually used in movies as jokes and such but one will likely find Pop Culture references in books as well!

That’s the best I can explain it without a quick copy and paste from Wikipedia. Generally speaking it’s something that becomes popularly used within the modern culture.

There we go! How’s that for a good definition! I’m kind of proud of that one! Came right off the top of my head!

lol :)

See you around.

And for the record….I hate that song!
