Creative Commons

For any topic, step one for me is to search it on wikipedia: Creative Commons

I am of the belief that copyright law is a balance between progress and incentives. We want to reward individuals for their creations, but not forever, so that their work or methods can be used by others to further innovation. I am of the belief that the scale has been screwed towards protecting corporate interests to the point that it is strangling progress.

To me, Creative Commons is a step in the right direction. It provides a body of work readily available for artists and innovators to draw from without fear of a trip to court and fine or sentence (as long as they respect the rules of the individual CC license the content creator has chosen). This idea reminds me very much of something I have researched previously, copyleft. This movement was born out of necessity. Many content creators, specifically free software developers, saw their code stolen and monetized by companies. Copyleft is a way to ensure that all derivations of your work are free, just as the original was, and is similar to one of the CC licenses, ShareAlike.

I don’t think I have any problem with licensing my work as Creative Commons. I don’t plan on monetizing any of my art or creations and I wouldn’t post anything online that I had privacy concerns about.
