ds106 Radio!

Listening to the ds106 radio station was not what I expected at all!  Here at UMW, we have a radio station, and when eating at the Nest, they play songs that are currently popular or old classics..You know, just like a regular radio station.  The ds106 radio station was more like National Public Radio (NPR).  I grew up listening to that because my family always took long car rides, and that’s all my parents listened to.

The radio station had different stories throughout the hour I listened, concerning people from all over the world.  There was usually a song in between each monologue or story that wasn’t pop or contemporary.  It was a nice change of pace-lots of jazz and more relaxing songs.

After letting my presence known via Twitter, I headed to the radio stream page.

Unfortunately, the only current listener was me…I’m assuming I was the “1″.  I really liked using this page, because I’m more of a visual person, so seeing what was being played stuck with me better than when they would announce the song right beforehand.  Also, if I forgot the name of what I was listening to, I could just look it up.

I listened to the 128k MP3 version of the radio show, but there is also a 64k MP3 version.  There weren’t any listeners on this bandwidth. :(

The stories were surprisingly interesting (no offense) and I found myself forgetting I was listening to the radio.  Just like reading a book, my imagination ran wild and during one particular broadcast, my heart was pounding and I was on the edge of my seat!  This story was the one in the photos above: Nightfall-Reunion at the Victory Cafe.
