On the subject of Digital Storytelling, I’ve decided to go with a sub-topic that happens to be something I enjoy; Writing.

Digital Storytellings offers a number of ways to share a variety of stories through writing such as. Basically you are given nine choices of ways to tell your “Digital Story”. The choices are as follows

  • Apogee!
  • Taking Down Google
  • Taking Down Google
  • Data of the Deed
  • Find Your Voice
  • Haiku it Up!
  • Wikihop Poem
  • Tell Me a Story
  • Seven-Character Story Treatement

Each piece that you will intend to write is to be treated as an assignment. Now what makes this fun as opposed to the typical ‘great, just another asignment’ attitude is that you get to choose, and you’ve got some pretty broad topics.

Just to give you an idea, I’ll take you a little more in-depth to a few of the topics.

Tell Me a Story seems to be one of the easiest to go with for starters. In short all you are doing is telling the story of any kind of experience you had, big or small. I believe the point here is to be able to find the right words, and express the right emotions that you felt on the day of happening. You are encouraged to take a picture, tell the story, and tell why you chose the story or why it is important to you.

One blogger tells her story in her blog entitled Filtering for Bags of Gold. She shares, with readers, the story of a dream she had one night after staying up late.

Other topics such as “Wikihop Poem” and “Haiku it Up” are for those of you who tend to be more artistic, but with words. With Wikihop Poem simply create your own poems, and with Haiku it Up the goal is to take a digital photo and create a haiku based on that image.

Now if you like writing, but are a little self-concious about your writing, this is your chance to make it better. As a token of motivation take a look at this short one minute clip on how to prove your writing skills.

You can also check out blogs where others post their original work, such as Short Stories Blog. Where the blogger categories all the short stories they’ve written onto the blog.  ds106 describes the “Seven-Character Story Treatment” by encouraging you to create your own seven character team (i.e. Justice League) and write a short plot for a potential movie and or tv pilot.

On the web -you may already know this- this is called “Fanfiction” and fanfiction is everywhere. Think of your favourite TV Show, and your movie and take a look at Fanfiction.net to get a look at other writers’ ideas. Moki’s Fanfiction Blog is also a good example, as the writer gives writing tips on getting started for fanfiction

Digital Story telling is meant to encourage your ability to tell stories through digital media. And ds106 offers a way to spread your work throughout the digital world by giving you a wide expansion of topics to choose from. In one way or another these topics given can cover any and every form of writing that you may be interested in doing. So what are you waiting for?
