When I was first exposed to “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by TS Eliot, I knew there was so much to be explored within the lines of this poem! I was really inspired to have the chance to depict the dark emotions and tone that run rampant throughout the poem.I included the legs because it is about the speaker’s journey through the city and all the observations/reflections he is able to collect. The eyes are a symbol of the eyes that the speaker feels are always watching him, ready to judge all of his inadequacies. After feeling that all eyes are on him for a majority of the piece, the speaker then claims that he should have been been as a crab “scuttling across the floors of silent seas” (74). In keeping with the speaker’s feelings of isolation, I wanted to keep my creation very simply, yet strange at the same.
Although this was a time-consuming project, I’m glad I was able to creatively express my interpretation of a poem that I have been working with since sophomore year. This creation was made from magazine clippings that I collaged together on a piece of computer paper. Cutting out the individual letters does take time (and patience!) but it is the best way to maintain authority over everything going onto the page. When I had overlapped the pictures and made sure that I had all the correct spacing, I begin gluing. Soon after that, it was all done!
I would recommend the piece to those who enjoy poetry!
