The first assignment required for the week is the “Sound Effects Story” created by Jim Groom. The purpose of this assignment is to create an audio story of just sound effects, no verbal communication. For this story I decided to do a typical war scene you may see in movies. As part of the assignment, we are supposed to give a narrative of what is going in the clip:
Running Through the Trenches
The private runs frantically through the muddy trenches, on a mission to give the attacking orders to the front lines. Radio communication has been taken out, requiring the use of foot soldiers to deliver important messages. This private was lucky enough to be selected.
He keeps moving, bullets flying around all around him. He can barely gather the courage to look up, when suddenly he hears an airplane approaching in the distance. He becomes curious as it begins to approach closer, but he dare not stop for fear of getting killed and failing his mission. The noise gradually gets louder and louder, and the private realizes that the gunned down airplane is on a direct crash course for his area. He picks up his pace, hoping to get far enough away from the crash radius. Finally he jumps for cover, holding onto his helmet for dear life, and is knocked unconscious immediately following impact.
Bright white light turns into a daydream of his favorite spot in the world, the private beach in his home town. This is where the 18 year old used to spend his summer days before he got drafted. He enjoys the familiar sounds of the seagulls and waves washing on shore. But the dream begins to fade, and he starts to regain consciousness.
The bright light is replaced by blurry smoke and a loud ringing in his ears. He is in a daze, still trying to figure out where he is. His heart is pounding as he gasps for breath. The fighting ensues, and the private begins to gather the strength to keep running. Taking a moment to pause, he says a quick prayer in his head, and reloads his gun for action.
