Video Assignment: Return to the Silent Era

This was a follow-up to my pre-production blog last week and I think it is probably about 3/4ths successful. First of all, I totally missed that the trailer was supposed to be between 3 and 5 min.  I’m putting it up anyways because it was a good learning experience and I am semi ok with the results.  I think it brings a silent film-esque feel to 21 that would not have been seen otherwise. I also think that some bits could be held longer or that there could be a more elegant transition to the cards- such as in the beginning.  There should be more footage time with the man asking how much the tie is. I’m surprised however that my idea actually worked out.

I used iMovie for this assignment and it’s an old version so there weren’t as many options as I was hoping there would be. I used a jazz song from my itunes called Winter Moon by Art Pepper and a b&w effect.  I had to find the image for a silent film card and then I created how ever many I thought would be able to convey a plot line and added text so that I could just insert the pictures over the video. I had to cut out all the speaking parts I didn’t use, but it was really fun to make.  I probably would have used different music because this song gives a more neo-silent detective film feel, rather than authentic antique silent film.  Here it is:
