Due to limited time, I created a short video from the footage that I had filmed over the last few days. The idea for the movie came to me from my Conversations From Class post when we had to write about what we had discussed in class with our feedback and advice for our projects. In this post I had given some suggestions to Alex to film some clips around campus and overlay effects that give it a feel of what happens in the day of a Mary Washington student.
A few days ago, I started out by trying to film the sun rising and then speeding it up. I had gotten up around 6 a.m. and started filming off my balcony and filmed for about 30 minutes until I stopped and realized that I wasn’t getting the footage that I wanted. From there I moved onto filming my friends doing everyday things. The volleyball footage was from the computer science spring picnic at the UMW apartments.
The idea for the reverse scenes in the movie came from Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) music video. In Gotye’s video, he uses a stop motion approach to paint the bodies and then to reverse it for the paint coming of the body.
The story that my final project tells is that life is short and that some things in life go too fast and others too slow. The footage that was slowed down and sped up doesn’t necessarily represent this though. The speed of the clips was more to capture the moments in and to see the change in progression.
I used Apple’s iMovie to import, edit and finalize the whole movie. The only effects I used on the clips was the difference in speed and the reverse effect. Some of the clips that I would have liked to use were to long to include in the video as I could only speed up the video to 2000%. It took some time to get all the clips to fit perfectly to the length of the song but it turned out well am I am happy with the results. I would have liked to have more video clips in the video so maybe that can be my next side project. :)
