Storytelling is a very clear concept in my head, yet it takes very different forms. The first thing I think about when I think of storytelling is sitting on the carpet in a circleish form around my teacher and listening to her/him read from a book. Storytelling was a time when I would get completely engrossed to the story the teacher was telling.
Everyone always loved Story Time, whether it was because it was right after lunch and you were happy and full with food or it was because you got to be emerged in an entirely different world than that of your own. As a kid, it was probably the former because I had just eaten and then we all got to relax and just listen and enjoy.
Another form of storytelling that is really special is campfires. Campfires are unique and really cool because everyone is gathered around a fire and somehow that makes the actual stories seem more interesting, the conversations more deep, the personal connections better.
DIGITAL DIGITAL GET DOWN
When I think of the word ‘digital’ inserted before storytelling, I no longer think of a group of eager kids gathered around the teacher’s chair listening intently to the lives of characters in another world. Rather, I imagine the students of DS106 all gathered around sitting in front of their laptops, seeing what kind of magic can be produced by the computer. It’s an interesting twist because I feel like the same kind of magic of Story Time is there, we’re just not lil kiddies anymore and it’s for college credit.
