Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!!

Hahahahahaha. That was my first response to a submission to an assignment from the in[SPIRE] website. It was the image that struck me first off: the image of Mary and Joseph holding baby Jesus. So I clicked on it, just out of curiousity because I usually tend to stay away from religious themes because I’m not a super religious person.

But this was really cool. The assignment was to take a movie and change one line/quote of a work of fiction so that it would change the entire plot and sequence. This one said underneath, “Look Joseph – she has your eyes!” I really liked this because I thought it was a really clever twist to this crucial Biblical story. It implies that this baby that Mary just had was actually fathered by Joseph and that it was a girl. When, in reality, the real story line is that Mary’s baby was God’s son, and was, therefore, a boy.

This is a digital story because it’s a piece of media that tells a story to the viewer, someone looking at it on their computer. With just one simple line of text, it tells an entire story. Because the topic is so well-known, it is easy for any viewer to understand the background information of the story and then to understand the profound affect the twist has. With it being digital, there are also several different interpretations one can take to it as well, which is also so cool.

I’m really glad I chose this piece from the in[SPIRE] site because it was a really interesting way to think about what digital storytelling means.
