Week 4 Summary

I would really like to get at least a video up at some point as a reflection like I did for week 1 but I’m not able to do it this week either.  It’s been crazy with all of the things going on so I just haven’t had time :-/

Audio Storytelling Reflection — So, I re-watched Jad Abumrad’s video because I liked his a lot more than Ira Glass’ but what I took from it this time was more to heart with the co-authorship.  I know that I spoke about it a bit in my reflection, but I really found it to be intriguing.  I’m really excited to use the techniques that I learned from both Glass and Abumrad for our Radio Show.  I think that my group is going to be the best group though.  I’m paying extra attention to detail and I really think that these two videos are going to be extremely helpful when it coms to the Radio Show.

Radio Story Summary – I went into a pretty detailed analysis of the Radio Story that I listened to in this post.  The thing that I took most from it, that I would love to include in our own Radio Show is the use of different tenses to tell a story and different people to tell that story.  For example, The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar was set both in present and past tense.  In the present, different people were telling the same story.  In the past, the narrator was talking and making it feel like it was a story that happened a long time ago.  It’s really hard to explain, but I hope that if you listen to the radio story, you get the same effect that I did.  They also used soft piano and other instruments as a sort of reflecting period.  After a dramatic moment, the piano would play and would actually create the time to think about what has just been said.

DS106 Radio Experience – So, this was absolutely amazing and I laughed so hard when I listened to this.  I still haven’t found out who it was that was talking during the time that I was listening, but whoever it was made the highlight of my week.  I’ve probably told a dozen people about the experience so far.  Certain songs would play and the guy that was on the other side of the broadcast was getting so hyped listening to the introduction of each song.  Sometimes he would bang on the keyboard or yell out “NICE!” or “GREAT SONG!” which made me laugh so hard.  I wasn’t expecting someone to be on the other side of the broadcast while I was listening to songs.  It’s really cool because during a regular radio station, they play the song and the DJ isn’t heard during the song.  For the DS106 radio, you hear everything.  Really great experience and I’ve already had it run in the background a couple times during the week just to see if I can hear any more of the banging on the keyboard.

5 Sound Story and Radio Bumper — So, for these two audio assignments, it took me a little bit longer than I probably should have spent on them but I had a blast making them so it’s time well spent in my opinion.  The 5 Sound Story was probably my favorite because I did my best to convey a certain meaning while I was playing it.  The Radio Bumper was a bit more challenging because I had no idea what we were supposed to be doing.  I went and searched on the DS106 website and found some other classmates’ work and kind of used that as a means to figure out what was going on.  Once I got the hang of it, it was a lot of fun.  I still liked the 5 Sound Story though the most.  That was the most fun because I went through about fifteen different clips before I found the one that I wanted to use the most.  I even got @mburtis to comment on my 5 Sound Story!

Daily Creates — These weren’t as fun as last weeks, but what are you gonna do.  I think that I really liked last weeks assignment because I got to do something with my grandpa.  The three that I chose to do this week just seemed to be pretty random.  I like that they are really easy to do though.  I much rather enjoy doing three Daily Creates though rather than four.  It gets hard to try to do one if you don’t really know how to do it or aren’t good at it.  I like to be able to have a little bit of variety.  I do like doing the Daily Creates though.  My favorites are taking pictures of things.  Sometimes they mean something, sometimes they are just random.  It’s a lot of fun to do the random ones :-)

Weekly Reflection — No link to this one because, well, this is my weekly reflection right here.  Normally, I would include a video here, but like I said in the beginning of my blog post for this week, I didn’t have enough time to make a video.  Anyways, I really enjoyed this week a lot more than the others so far.  I didn’t think that it would be possible to look at this week as more fun than last week but I think the 5 Sound Story made me enjoy this week a lot more.  That was definitely the most fun that I’ve had for sure.  I’m looking forward to doing the Radio Show for sure.  This is, by far, my favorite class that I’ve ever taken at Mary Washington.  It’s in a completely different ballpark than any other course that I’ve taken before.  I hope that we can keep on doing stuff like this in the future.  The one thing that I don’t like doing is embedding a bunch of stuff into my Week Summary.  I just like the clean look of the text.  You can find all of the embedded material in my links.  Plus, I know how to embed stuff obviously if it’s embedded in my specific blogs.  For those of you that would like to see the embedded material, you should click on my different blogs and read what I’ve got to say there as well!
