week four recap

This week we were introduced to using audio media to tell a story.  At the beginning we were instructed to watch videos about storytelling through the radio and then write a blog about it.  Both Ira Glass and Radiolab‘s Jad Abumrad  brought up great ideas on conveying a story through the radio.  It is difficult to convey a story with enough passion to allow listeners to really want to pay attention, through out the videos Ira Glass and Radiolab‘s Jad Abumrad describe both good and bad ways in conveying a story to the listeners.  The link for the blog on Ira Glass and Radiolab‘s Jad Abumrad videos is below.

Once I completed my blog on Ira Glass and Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad, I listened to a radio story called eat cake,

and blogged about it and the techniques it used  http://ashstegemiller.com/wordpress/2012/09/22/cake-nomz-review-of-eat-cake-story/. Overall I found the techniques used to convey the story to be really cool and interesting.  The background noises helped to make me feel as if I was there and I enjoyed how the artist played around with the varying levels of audio for each characters voice, making it seem as if when a character’s audio level changed the place in which the story was taking placed changed as well.

After blogging about the audio/sound story I created my own radio story using clips from freesound.org and a specified theme, being at the beach.  At first it was difficult but I had a former ds106 student answer questions when I felt lost.  I wrote in my blog about why I chose the beach and the difficulties I faced when creating the audio/sound story. A link to the blog is below…along with the audio/sound story.

After creating the audio/sound story I listened to the ds106radio stream and wrote a blog about it.  I found the radio to be kind of interesting for a lack of words. It had a large variety of what was being played, which was kind of cool because I did enjoy some of the music that was played when I was listening.  The blog I wrote includes the tweet I sent while listening to the blog along with a screen shot on how many people were on listening to the radio at the same time I was.  The link to that blog is below….

Once that blog was created I created a short radio bumper for the ds106radio.  It was cool to find background noises to use and learn how to adjust the noises on audacity so that one noise wasn’t overpowering another.  The blog for the bumper is listed below along with the bumper.

The bumper assignment completed all the radio/ audio assignments for the week.  As usual we were assigned to do daily creates.  I chose the daily create on finding an image of three or a group of three things…

Dailycreate 3s

I liked how creative some people got with finding hidden threes.

The second daily create I did was based on graffiti and how cool it can look sometimes.  I have seen some amazing graffiti but I chose to use the one that me and my friends did one night my first year in college.  It brought back some great memories and I am glad I got to capture the moment with some pictures.

Car graffiti

The last daily create that I did was on national mini golf day….which I had no clue existed. I thought it was cool that they made a day for such a sill game but none the less it was cool. I was going to attempted to draw a picture on the computer than upload it that way but I decided to think outside the box…..which made my life partially easier….and just drew the image on a piece of paper and then took a picture of it with my computer camera.

Overall this week was fun with all of the assignments.  It was more challenging than previous weeks but that is to be expected.  I enjoyed creating the soundclips a lot more than I expected and am glad that I have a friend that took this class previously who was able to help me when I had questions.  I have come to a realization that I do not use twitter as much as I should for this class but I have come to hate twitter these past two weeks and dislike posting about things on twitter.  Although I did tweet what I was suppose to for the ds106radio guidelines…I am working on getting over this dislike but for now it is some what of a challenge for me.
