Watch and Learn

Now bring on the turkey! I’m ready to head home for Thanksgiving. Looking forward to relaxing on the couch and eating delicious food! I hope every single one of you are able to enjoy the holiday just the same.

Anyways, what week is it again? I can’t even remember! BUT it was Video Week. Video week was challenging and scary at the beginning. But I pushed through and wrote a script for each of the videos I produced. I then proceeded to get everything I needed together to make my videos. I did one at a time (so I wouldn’t get flustered) and I think that my videos came out pretty well for being a video noob.

Want to take a look into each video and the production? You can check out my blog post for each by clicking the title link, or you can just watch the videos! Here they are:

Inside the Animal Mind

This video is narrating the thoughts of a pet. Since I unfortunately do not have a pet, I used my girlfriend’s dog as my example. I was a little surprised that the assignment had not been completed by any prior students besides the one that submitted the assignment. Maybe it was new? Anyway, I thought it was fun to create and I hope more students decide to do this assignment in the future. It wasn’t hard to pull together and I find myself narrating what animals do when they are just playing around anyways so I figured this wouldn’t even be like working!

ROB, WHY WON’T THIS PRINT?!

Apparently a lot of students mothers need some tutorials on how to do work a computer…The more I read other students assignments and thought about it, I realized that a lot of moms…and women…aren’t exactly tech savvy. Which is an understatement. Most know how to turn it on and then type something in word…Oh boy has our generation been changing! Anyways, my mom always had an issue with the print spooler going offline and not letting her print. (I actually had to ask my dad to help her the first time she needed help because I didn’t know either) But every time after that, she would be okay for a month or two and then it would happen again and she would forget. I eventually wrote it down for her, and NOW she has this awesome video to refer to!

EMS Skills for Beginners

Another assignment not completed by other students…I don’t think the person that created the assignment even made one! BUT have no fear, Rob is here and he will pave the way for future students! I think this is a really great assignment for a future student to follow because I used previous tools from earlier weeks and video tools for this week: Fastest Youtube Downloader, Audacity, and Windows Movie Maker. I thought it was really cool that I was using all these programs together for one assignment. I’m glad DS106 has prepared me for video week in the previous weeks!

Chicken: It’s What’s For Dinner

Last but not least, I made my own cooking show. This one was a doozy, but well worth my effort. Maybe it was hard because I had to shoot video, create audio, as well as act at the same time? It makes it hard to edit what was said and you have a lot of video to go through. On my other videos, if I messed up I just re-recorded the audio. This video was do or die on the spot. I would like to think I succeeded…but I did end up with a blooper/outtake reel. (Probably the best part of the video!) A lot of other students created some awesome meals which I would love to try, and they also pointed out that 3 stars was low. To which, I absolutely agree, but I didn’t go for stars this week. I broke out of my video scaredy-catness and just produced what I could and didn’t worry about the numbers.

I had a lot of fun over the past two weeks learning and producing videos. One of the biggest lessons I learned, and advice I would give to future students is to NOT wait until the last minute to work with video. Not only does it take time to record video, it takes even more time to edit it. Watching and clipping videos is repetitive and time-consuming. I spent a lot of time on my videos and they still aren’t perfect. I think if I had to redo the work for this week, I would focus on bettering my voice(I think I was at a loss for words/scared at times) and making better transitions between clips.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy my videos!
