Happy Turkey Day!!

Over the next two weeks our DS106 class will be delving into remixes, mashups, and all other kinds of shenanigans! But, in an effort to get done early, I’m “working” on Thanksgiving/on break. (Since when is DS106 work?) I was watching the videos on remixing this week…

Everything Is A Remix Part 1
Everything Is A Remix Part 3
A Fair(y) Use Tale

…and my Mother came in and said, “I thought you were doing homework?” In reply, “I am doing homework…now do you understand why I like this class? I’m learning and developing skills, but having fun doing so! Can’t say that about Spanish!” She actually walked in while I was watching this sweet remix:

So what did I learn from watching the reference videos? One of things I took away was from the Remix 3 video and that most people don’t just create something amazing original. They start at the bottom of the pole copying other peoples works until they are good enough to make something on their own. Another thing I took from the video is that  putting together different ideas/works can result in some of the most creative and useful things of all time. And that is exactly what you need, time. Creating a breakthrough takes time, and that is why everyone isn’t a millionaire and becoming one doesn’t happen overnight. (That breakthrough may make a million in one night…but you get my point)

Reviewing some of the examples of remixes, I realized that all of them use original content, but put them together to make a flow. And not only does the video or audio flow, but it’s actually something people can get used to. From the Fair(y) Use Tale, I realized that there is a way to beat the system and work off of their ideas. So just like the reference video says, we copy the idea of others until we are proficient to create something new. But in these cases, we’re copying the work of 2 or more sources and using our imaginations to essentially create something new. Something that you wouldn’t have ever thought to do, or thought that it could have been used for. A good example of waiting to create something cool is this video:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer seasons were from 1997-2003, yet Twilight only came out in 2008. This is a creation that took time because good material to make this video came 5 years after the rest of the content. So be patient, don’t get intimidated by those who have already had their breakthroughs, and have fun remixing!
