Soumitra Dutta’s article in the Harvard Business Review covers everything you want to know about establishing a social media presence. I have experienced first hand some of the dilemmas he discusses about finding the right presence. I try to keep my Facebook PG and am very cautious as to who I add and how I control my privacy settings. I also recently made a similar decision with my Twitter. I used to be a lot more opinionated when it was private however I decided to open it up to the public and watch what I say a little more. The point of Twitter is to be connected to the world and I felt like my tweets were wasting away under privacy. Now I think twice before every tweet, making sure I don’t say something I might regret in the future.
The importance of a presence in social media no matter how high on the food chain is evident. One of my favorite follows on Twitter is billionaire Mark Cuban. Cuban is an active tweeter, never afraid to share his opinion on anything from patent law to live-tweeting episodes of Shark Tank. He establishes a personal connection with his audience that makes him more relatable and human. One quick look at his website demonstrates how he utilizes social media to advance his multiple companies and investments.
