So. It’s finally over! Bootcamp is finally finished and we’re all still standing (or sitting at our computers). It took a couple weeks, but I’d say we’re all getting into the swing of things. I noticed a huge increase in the number of completed daily creates and I know I’m having fun! I’m not worrying about every single detail being perfect, because life’s not like that. From now on, I’m just goin’ with the flow.
As far as the daily creates are concerned…I love them! At first I was worried I would struggle to get two per week, but I found that I actually liked a lot of the assignments and I looked forward to doing them. It makes for a nice change when the weather is crappy or I have to read a thousand chapters on Genetics and Invertebrate Zoology. I completed three daily creates this week.
The first daily create I did was in response to the prompt: Submit a favourite monologue from a movie with every third word removed. After debating between Pride & Prejudice, Love Actually, and lots more chick flicks, I decided to go a different direction and chose Erin Brockovich. I love this movie because it’s a story of the underdog winning and empowering women…who doesn’t love that?
Here’s the original monologue:
Erin Brockovich: “Oh see, now that pisses me off. First of all, since the demur we have more than 400 plaintiffs and… let’s be honest, we all know there are more out there. They may not be the most sophisticated people but they do know how to divide and $20 million isn’t shit when you split it between them. Second of all, these people don’t dream about being rich. They dream about being able to watch their kids swim in a pool without worrying that they’ll have to have a hysterectomy at the age of twenty. Like Rosa Diaz, a client of ours. Or have their spine deteriorate, like Stan Blume, another client of ours.
So before you come back here with another lame ass offer, I want you to think real hard about what your spine is worth, Mr. Walker. Or what you might expect someone to pay you for your uterus, Ms. Sanchez. Then you take out your calculator and you multiply that number by a hundred. Anything less than that is a waste of our time. By the way, we had that water brought in specially for you folks. Came from a well in Hinkley.”
And here’s the monologue with every third word removed. It makes for a much more confusing read!
Erin Brockovich: “Oh see, that pisses off. First all, since demur we more than plaintiffs and, be honest, all know are more there. They not be most sophisticated, but they know how divide and million isn’t when you it between. Second of, these people dream about rich. They about being to watch kids swim a pool worrying that have to a hysterectomy the age twenty. Like Diaz, a of ours. have their deteriorate, like Blume, another of ours.
So before come back with another ass offer, want you think real about what spine is, Mr. Walker. what you expect someone pay you your uterus, Sanchez? Then take out calculator and multiply that by a. Anything less that is waste of time. By way, we that water in special you folks. came from well in.”
Here are some more examples of this daily create by my classmates and this is my original post for the assignment. It was kind of of confusing and time consuming to sit there and have to count every third word to remove, but it was funny to see the final product.
The next daily create I completed was titled “Got milk? Another favourite beverage? Make a picture. Make it Art.” Milk is not my favourite beverage by far, but orange juice is. Instead of taking a photo of an orange juice carton, I decided to go to the source. An orange tree. Not only do I love orange juice, but plain old oranges. I eat one a day (at least!). Below is my photo for this daily creation:
Halfway through the week, I had done my two mandatory daily creates, but another interesting prompt came along, so I went ahead and did this one too! “Contre-jour it, make a photo where subject is silhouetted by shooting into bright light.”
My classmates had more amazing photos, found here!
Another big assignment we had this week was to make a gif from a favourite movie of ours. I wanted to choose something that had emotion and a lot of people have probably seen, so I chose Inglourious Basterds.
The gif making process was pretty straight forward. I followed these directions and the only trouble I had was trying to save the image out of GIMP. Turns out you’re supposed to export it, not save it! I also decided to take the initiative and put words on mine, to make it more personal and dramatic. I had to follow a lot of youtube videos, like this one, and it was pretty frustrating, but I finally figured it out. (Don’t ask me to do it again!)
Other than these great and fun assignments I did this week, I also did a little behind-the-scenes blog editing. I changed my theme because I wanted more photo room in the header and I also like the set-up of this one better. I now use the theme “Panels” by Sarah Kettle.
To make notifications more efficient, I linked my school email ([email protected]) to my blog and I added the plugin Akismet. Akismet is great! I don’t get nearly as much spam anymore, and when I do, I get emailed to take care of it. I’m really glad I activated this plug-in.
My welcome site reflects a little more about me, but really, I’m just using it as a doorstep to my ds106 blog. It has a link to my Amateur Hour blog and a small, how-are-ya blip. I used the same theme in my entrance site to create a sense of flow and continuity.
All in all, I can’t wait for what’s coming next in ds106! Thanks for reading my reflection!
