or, as I like to call it, “Stop looking at me weird. This is for a class.“
As a senior, I’m already feeling a bit nostalgic about my time at Mary Washington. I’ve been planning on walking around and taking pictures for my scrapbook. So for this assignment, I knew that I wanted to do it on campus. But where?!?!
Let’s start in Trinkle!
I figured Trinkle would be a good place to start. I knew I wanted to take at least one photo of the Trinkle clock in the lobby.
While it would have been ideal to go in order… it was easier and quicker to just find what I could where I was.
That’s when I looked up and saw the beautiful dome of Trinkle. I figured that this could represent the idea of “openness.”
Then I remembered what a professor had shown me once and how it would be an unusual angle… cause it’ll be backwards!
I decided to have a little fun with the supernatural photo. I have never seen Trinkle dark, and this was kind of scary.
But after roaming around Trinkle, I started to run out of ideas…
OFF TO MONROE!
The first thing I did was try to get a photo of the marble and bronze bust of Monroe for complexity. But after looking at it on my camera, I thought it looked closer to “Make a photo that is abstract, that would make someone ask, ‘Is that a photograph?’” It almost looks like I edited it, but I didn’t!
I wandered into a classroom and looked for some converging lines. I saw the tray for markers on the whiteboard and had an idea. I put the camera on the tray and tried to center it the best I could. I did edit this on–but just a cropping to make it more aesthetically pleasing (aka I took out the chairs on the right of the photo).
I was running out of ideas! So I traveled downstairs, and in the stairwell, I saw this light. It was out, but the texture was interesting. I decided that this could fulfill the “dominated by a single color” photo.
Then I backtracked and got distracted…
I saw this mural on the wall, and knew it’d be perfect for the hand photo. No one was in Monroe, so I knew I wouldn’t have much luck taking a photo of a real person. While I was taking the photo, though, his hand looked like the hand from the Creation of Adam… so I did a little improvisation.
Finally, I took on the “two things that do not belong together” photo… such as me in a men’s restroom…. (It was the weekend so nobody was there!)
After I got to Monroe, I started having a lot of fun. Mostly because Monroe is my building. So taking a different perspective in a building I thought I knew so well was rather exciting. You can tell by my last photo I started to have a lot of fun!
Other Photoblitzs
I took a look at some other photoblitz photos, too!
I love love love this! The lighting is so well done. Plus, it’s a perspective I’ve never had of lanterns–believe it or not!
I also enjoyed this one:
I didn’t even try the shadow one, but now wish I had. I was so busy focusing on the other ones I forgot about this one. I like this photo, though, because it doesn’t look like an elephant. I have to put the pieces together like she did.
Finally, I picked this one:
I pass by this nearly everyday, but I never really looked at it as something out of place. I figured, “Oh UMW!” So from now on I won’t be able to look at it and move on… it’ll always bug me…
