I am such a music girl, never a talking girl. Maybe because I just like the hear the sound of my own voice rather than others, but who knows. Long story short, I have never been one who listened to the radio that much. However, I ended up really enjoying the whole process of creating a radio show, the opportunities just keep on knocking and I keep on answering!
We had a bit of a slow start as a group, but I think that we managed by the end.
Originally, Tiffany and Kristen and I were talking via twitter and were going to do a discussion radio show on social issues to begin with. However, once Tim and Kyle came into the group, we decided to take an entirely different route, and I’m glad we did. We decided to do a radio drama instead so that we could encompass different character roles. It makes things a lot easier and the possibilities were endless.
We decided to go into a group chat room in order to have the freedom to discuss what we wanted to work on, and came to the conclusion that we wanted to do a radio drama about a group project, since we all love group projects so much. So we decided to make this radio group project about a group project about the solar system. Confusing? Not so much. There are always people in groups that make projects toxic, so we decided to dramatize those characters and put them all together for just one project that will go horribly wrong.
Because it seemed as though we all didn’t communicate well via the Internet with the limited characters of twitter, we decided that meeting up in person two times throughout the week would be a good idea. The first time we worked through all the logistics of the program. We already had our character established, but now we wanted to get a script together. We really just got the general idea down and figured out everything that we wanted to do. Since there are so many different times where people wereĀ interruptingĀ each other, we decided to record together and meet up again. So we met up and recorded the script. It was a really good system, we would run through the script and see if everything made sense, and then we would start recording.
I then took the recordings home and put them together. It was pretty easy to do at first since we recorded each meeting at a time so that it all flowed together. However, I wanted to do something with the sound effects. I thought that adding in a few different things after people said something would be a good touch and add a bit of humor into the radio show. After all, I enjoy to laugh. Sometimes making things overly dramatic will help add a bit of humor to something, so that’s what I decided to do. While I believe that what we were doing was mainly in our comfort zone, editing and producing the radio show most certainly wasn’t. I found myself constantly thinking about what other radio shows were about and I decided to add a lot more than we originally had. Not only the sound effects, but the beginning and the end of the narration of it as well.
Overall, I was really glad with how well it went. The radio show tells the story of the group project and the terrible things that could happen. Luckily for me, this was just a story and not a reality. We all worked very well together and working together in person made everything easier for us. When listening back to the whole radio show, I was pleased with how everything turned out. I hope people will enjoy our show and relate to it by thinking back to group projects that they have had to work on in the past. It’s the story that we all tell, but it’s a dramatized version of it. I hope you all enjoy it when you listen to it on ds106 radio on Monday March 18th at 11:00pm!
Thanks for reading (and listening!),
