Radio Show Critique

This week, my group, the Fab Five, was assigned to listen to the Dot Commer’s radio show called The Science of Group Projects. It’s about a group of students who have to do a group project.

But wow, I thought this group did a great job! I was surprised that this group was able to take something so small like working on a group project, and making a fun, interesting story. Each character had a distinct personality, and the storyline was very relatable. I was listening to the show, and going like, “Yeah, that’s happened to me” or “OMG, she sounds like So-and-so from freshman year Bio!” However, at the same time, this story might only make sense and interest me because I’m a college student as well. I wonder if this would be as appealing to someone outside of the show’s target audience. Would someone who has finished college a long time ago be able to understand everything that’s going on in the show?

In regards to audio, I thought everything was good. The volume levels of the show, the commercials, and the bumper were at a comfortable level. There was also no background noise during everyone’s parts. Thank goodness, because that would have BUGGED me so much. However, I thought that some people could have recorded their parts on a different device because it was pretty noticeable that the quality wasn’t as good as other people’s.

In terms of music, I really liked the song that came on after the introduction; however, I wasn’t sure if it really fit the mood of the story. It sounded very serious and pensive, but the story was neither of those things. Maybe another song would have been more fitting? Like something more whimsical and funny?

But oh my goodness, I thought this group did such a great job with the sound effects. I liked how there were a ton of different ones that fit the story (such as the door opening) but then there were some that were used to enhance the story (such as the drum noise at the end of a joke or the beeping sound whenever someone cursed).

Overall, I thought the Dot Commers did a great job. They were able to tackle this assignment in a different, unique way than my group did, and create an interesting story that flowed cohesively. I would give them a 4.1 out of 5 stars!
