Fifth Dimension Radio Show Eval

On top of evaluating another group’s radio show this week, we also had to evaluate our own show using the same criteria:

~Quality of audio sound

~Quality of audio editing

~Use of sound effects

~Use of music

~Structure/cohesiveness

~Storytelling effectiveness/Draw in listener

To start off, it wasn’t made clear in the introduction of our show that we chose a soundscape theme to organize our clips. A soundscape theme is using a bunch of audio assignments from the ds106 assignment bank to create clips centered around our theme: the twilight zone.  So from the beginning, our show made very little sense in organization and probably seemed very disjointed and random…but that’s also the twilight zone; very random and weird.

I think our audio sound was ok. The volume wasn’t perfect sometimes (Yoda was hard to hear), but you were able to hear most everything.  There were also noises in the background of some clips, but that’s standard for all the shows I felt like.

Our transitions were pretty choppy, but the little intros before each clip helped to ease each portion of the show together.  I think we used a lot of sound effects too, not just in the commercials. The twilight theme music was used a lot, so that got pretty repetitive after a while.  We could have found similar music that wasn’t the theme but still drew in the listener.

To the outside ear, who didn’t know about the soundscape theme, I think our cohesiveness would be awful to them and it would seem like we just randomly put stuff together quickly.  But it actually took a lot of time and effort to make this show and to not repeat ourselves and ideas.

When I listen to our show, I give it 4/5 stars, but to someone not in our group, I’ll bet they see it as a 3/5 if they didn’t know what the Twilight Zone was or what the soundscape theme was all about.
