Prepping for Video Work…

One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds

To prep for the One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds assignment I first had to pick an archetype, which is easier said than done. Many of my ideas were too specific but I eventually settled on the “Badass Female” archetype, which is something I’ve studied a little bit being a Gender Studies major. For this, I picked the following characters and downloaded clips of them.

  • Katniss Everdeen- The Hunger Games
  • Buffy- Buffy The Vampire Slayer
  • Gwen Cooper- Torchwood
  • Elizabeth Swann- Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Sydney Bristow- Alias

I will edit them together after trimming each clip into one second segments to make the 5 second archetype assignment.

As part of my prep work, I looked at Michael Branson Smith’s Doll House of Nerd Girls video  and Stefanie’s Troll Clip. I liked them both, even if they were more than 5 seconds each. I liked how Stefanie slowed hers down to give more of a view of the trolls and I liked Michael’s because of the way the music worked with all of the clips. I may slow mine down a little bit like Stefanie did.

Return To The Silent Era

For the Return To The Silent Era assignment I wanted to do a scene that was a bit ridiculous and after struggling to find the perfect clip from reality TV, I settled on the scene from Torchwood where Captain Jack brings Owen back from the dead. I’m not a fan of silent movies and think that this assignment will be an interesting challenge as well as being fun to do since Torchwood is such a ridiculous show.

I downloaded the clip using KeepVid and downloaded a title card from Michael  Smith, a fellow ds106er. I also downloaded Gagool by Kevin MacLeod from Incompetech to use as my background music.

To prep for the assignment, I also watched Crystal’s Moulin Rouge silent film treatment and Eric’s Drive trailer. While Eric only seemed to add captions to the trailer, Crystal made the clip into a work of art, turning it black and white and giving it title cards, which is what I plan to do with the Torchwood scene.
