So good news, I’ve (and the rest of you all) made it through the first week of ds106. Bad news, I’m not really sure I could do it all again if I tried. This week was a lot of playing around and clicking in hopes to find the right thing. Luckily I think I found and did everything that I was supposed to (think being the important word here).
Reflection on media-
This week we were presented with a couple different media videos and pictures and told to just kind of see what jumped out at us. I picked out three things that I found the most interesting and decided to share what part of them really struck a chord with me (I also linked the videos so you can see where they came from).
- The Robert Hughes video was one that I found quite interesting and really enjoyed. He brought up multiple points that I found to be striking and quite interesting. The one that stood out to me the most was when he was talking about children. He said that children have a different relationship with the world around them that we do not have as adults. It was incredibly interesting for me to about this because, as a future elementary school teacher, I couldn’t agree more.
- The Stephen Johnson video was one of the most entertaining and creative videos I had even seen. It was so creative that I just sat at my computer for about five minutes trying to come up with a good word to describe it (which I clearly couldn’t since I stuck with creative, I thought about going with mind-blowing for a while though). After getting about half way though this video the first time I realized that I had not really been listening to what he was talking about because I was just constantly waiting to see what he was going to draw next. I ended up watching this three times and decided that I’d like him to come and teach all of my classes.
- Let me precede this one by saying that I find Ted Talks to be one of the most interesting things ever. I can’t say that I have watched a ton but I love watching ones that people suggest or recommend to me. That being said, I was thrilled when Kelli Anderson’s Ted talk was one of the media clips for us this week. Please know I’m being totally honest when I say I sat in front of my computer with my mouth hanging open while watching this. I mean she made a wedding invitation into a paper record player. The wedding invitation played music! I was so impressed that someone would ever think of doing something like this. I was caught between watching the rest of her video and trying to come up with what random things around my room could be used for aside form their ”normal” jobs. (And then I had to resist watching all the other Ted talks out of the suggestions so that I could actually get some of my other homework done).
Daily Create-
In case you missed it before here is my Daily Create again:
Recording myself was a weird experience. Hopefully it becomes less weird as the semester goes on or I’ve got a long road ahead of me. I totally watched other peoples before I made mine for both inspiration and to calm my nerves. Sadly, the first one I watch was really good and made me a bit more nervous. My camera also isn’t the greatest so it’s kind of fuzzy.
Media Links-
Here are all my links to my media in case you wanted to follow me on any of them. From the way things are going it seems like I am going to have many more embarrassing videos like the one above so I’m sure you’re going to want to make sure to catch all of those (I’m kidding about the embarrassing part, kind of).
Twitter Introduction-
And here was my introduction to ds106 via twitter. I hope all my friends are excited to see these tweets throughout the semester

About Page-
Here is a link to my about page.
I always find it hard to write interesting things about myself in these sort of things. Don’t be surprised if this changes a few times throughout the semester. I’ve already edited three times and I’m still hoping to come up with something a bit more interesting.
Reflection on First Week–
Like I said above this past week was a bit overwhelming to me. I have a little bit of experience with wordpress from past classes but it definitely took a while to get back into the swing of things. I admittedly did a lot of clicking on things with the hopes that it could be the right thing. I’m really excited to see where this class is going to lead in the future and to see all the things we are going to create. I can honestly say I not super excited to creating more videos of myself but hopefully they get less uncomfortable over time. I am extra excited for next week when we get to make our blogs more personalized. I went ahead and changed the background color because I wasn’t fond of the boring, ugly white color scheme.
But that’s all I have for now! See y’all next week!
