What is storytelling? When I hear that word, I don’t think about the hundreds of books I’ve read over the years. I think about someone who verbally tells an adventure, whether that be real or fiction. I imagine my Dad and the adventures he told my sisters and I when I was a kid. I think of my old bedroom when I was little, and I see my Dad talking fast and ecstatically about Huckleberry Finn. When someone uses the word “storytelling”, I also think about my boyfriend, Kevin, and his hilarious stories of when he was a kid. He can capture anyone’s attention in a room and force their emotions to range across the board. Anyone who can tell a great story and keep the audience hooked, is who I consider a terrific storyteller.
When I heard the term digital storytelling, I didn’t know what to think at first. I’ve always had the notion that storytelling is verbal, and when I think digital, I think social media, like Facebook or Twitter. After thinking about it for a while, I decided that digital storytelling is still how I picture plain, old-fashioned storytelling, but through different mediums. The internet allows people to share their stories around the world from the comfort of their home.
