Analyzing a Story

Another one of out assignments this week was to listen to an audio story. I already discussed a little bit about what an audio story is this week so I was excited to apply what I thought to a real story.   For my audio story I picked Dopplegangers off my This American Life.  When I was looking at other people from our classes blogs I saw that a couple of them had picked this story as well.  I didn’t read their reviews in detail because I didn’t want to spoil it all before I listened, but they all seemed interested in this story.

When I picked this story I really had no idea what a Doppleganger was at all. I started off by looking it up what a Doppleganger was.  According to Merriam Webster a Doppleganger is:

a ghostly counterpart of a living person

I found this story very interesting and much different than what I had expected.  I found the story about the calamari totally disgusting.  When they decided to fry up the real calamari and the artificial calamari (also known as hog rectum) and ended up not being able to tell the difference, I was grossed out to the extreme.

But the important part of listening to this was more so the way the story was told instead of the story itself.  I really really enjoyed how they used the different interviews and even overlapped them as a method of telling the story.  I also found that they did a great job of using words to describe things.  I often found myself picturing what they had said in my mind with little problems at all.  On the negative side, I found this story to be pretty long.  I found myself dosing off a few times during their stories.  I truly believe this had much more to do with me being a bit exhausted than the way the story was told.  If the story was a bit shorter I think I would have had a much easier staying engaged in it though.
