When I was told that I would need to listen to ds106 radio this week, I was not sure what to expect. I had seen talk on twitter about it, but, having never listened to internet radio before, I went in with no real expectations.
I decided to listen in on Wednesday night after being informed by Grant Potter that Dr. Jones would be broadcasting live later that night.
@bellekid the word is @drjones106 will be mixing live tonight #ds106radio – not sure the time #ds106

I was not sure what to expect when I tuned in, at around 10:45pm est. In fact, at the beginning of Dr. Jones’s broadcast, I was rather confused as to what was going on as I heard the phrase “Can you dig it?” being repeated over and over again.
#ds106radio is so strange right now, so strange but interesting… #ds106

I was not the only person listening to Dr. Jones’s broadcast on Wednesday night, there were about 10 listeners including Miss Amber May who was also a bit perplexed about what was being broadcast.

@bellekid @foxylee13 turn it up right now ya’ll… SANTOGOLD #ds106radio

Besides the somewhat random intro, Dr. Jones played mostly a mix of Santigold and MIA, which was nice. I enjoy both artists but do not listen to them all that often. After playing a few songs by the two artists, he started talking, informing us that he was live from the ‘Sound Lab’ and that he was experimenting with audio and sound levels but he had a ‘shitty mic’ so that might affect his broadcast a little bit.
His broadcast continued with a mix of him talking and music which was mostly dance music. He told listeners that he did not do requests but he did dedicate a mashup to Gina Garcia, a fan of the radio station, congratulating her on her “new job.”
I found Dr. Jones’s broadcast to be interesting, so much so that I listened to it for nearly two hours until I fell asleep. I found his voice to be a little creepy and slow but perfect for radio. He kept me hooked and interested for the whole broadcast which I honestly was not expecting.
My first experience listening to ds106 radio went well and I plan on listening to it more throughout the semester whether or not I am required to for class.
