Return to the Silent Era: “How to Train Your Dragon”

Bam! Video assignment number two (and 5 more stars): complete!

I’m really busting them out now. Thank goodness I’ve seem to overcome that ridiculous learning curve that I experience any time we move on to a new section in DS106. It was rough while it lasted, but I’m hoping we are through the worst of it now.

As promised in my pre-production stuff, I made “How to Train Your Dragon” a silent movie trailer. I pretty much followed my plan of attack exactally, and I only ended up changing a couple parts. One thing I did different than my original plan was that I didn’t use the song from the movie soundtrack in the background. Instead I used this silent movie music from “Cafe Elektric.” I just thought it made it clearer that I was making a silent movie and not some random video. (A crazy thing happened around 1:17 in the video, the music and the video go so well together at this point its creepy! I’m not gonna pretend to take credit for that; it was just a happy accident. But even so, take a look at it, its pretty impressive!)

Also, I decided to not make it black and white. I used a filter in Windows Movie Maker that made the colors dull and muted and also made the “film” look scratchy. I tried the oldest version of this filter, which made it entirely black and white, but I just didn’t like it. So, I settled for the medium old version.

Finally, I like this video assignment the best so far. I think mostly because I didn’t have to video myself or record myself speaking. I want to find more assignments like this! :)

Here’s what I’m talking about:

So here’s a question for ya….. Why does the last half of this video freeze and then the video clips stop working? I tried re-importing the movie as well as  re-uploading the movie to Vimeo, but neither of those worked. Then I tried going back into the project file and cutting those sections of the video again and adding them to the movie again. The strangest part is that this problem does not exist in the MovieMaker project file; all the clips work fine right through the whole video. Also, all the video is from a single trailer that I cut down, so it doesn’t seem like a problem with the trailer itself. I spent a bunch of time trying to figure it out and now I just don’t know what to do. :( This is frustrating, people!!!
