Being an otaku it be nearly impossible for me not to notice remixes presented throughout anime, as the name of Kirby’s videos implies, everything in anime is a remix. The second video on remixed movie scenes really highlights the overall same methods used in creating anime. What makes anime such a cheap source of entertainment is from the use of repeated, drawn out clips. Now if any of you have seen some joke or parody mocking Japanese animation it most likely has been about how they really draw out scenes for extended periods of time, such as long transformation sequences in mahou shoujo series (magical girl). A well known example of this is Sailor Moon, where you will always see this long transformation sequence at least once per episode:
Now this may seem cheap and lazy but this means of remixing has been carried on throughout countless series and doesn’t only apply to magical girl series but many mech, action, comedy and other genres of anime. Another really cool example of this remix in anime is this video that details how every single opening sequence of anime has at least one similar element as the other. This video used 100 different animes and compiled them into a completely coherent sequence of birds flying, flower petals falling, people running and chasing, people lamenting, laughing, crying etc. I just think this is an awesome piece of work:
Furthermore, aside from the literal animation production most animes are based off of manga works by their respective authors. Some of these tell the exact same story word by word, but then you have others that have stories that completely change the original work. A well known example of this is the series Fullmetal Alchemist, the original anime series was being developed at the same time as the manga was being written, so it is assumed because of this the story had to change course a bit to allow for an actual conclusion. This caused characters to become all new people who have done things that were not canon, as well as not introducing entire plot elements that were in the original story. This is often known as an anime original story and is extremely common, in fact its often considered a miracle that an anime will tell the actual original story. But this by no means means these anime originals are any less entertaining than the original stories, some may even be considered better. Later on Fullmetal Alchemist was reintroduced into anime as the manga’s story was coming to a close, as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. This told the story as intended, but the start of the series was basically exactly the same as the first anime created of the series. So many elements were retold and reused but this time it was sped up a little just to get an idea of the story again, but not to bore the people who know it already.
So in short the world of anime, as well as everything else, just as Kirby said simply cannot exist without the means of remixing. Its through these elements that the industry and people’s love of anime grow.
