Return to the Silent Era again for the first time.

Here’s one of the video assignments I did.  It’s taking a scene or trailer from a movie and putting it into the silent era of cinema.  I chose to use the trailer for the Watchmen because I thought it would translate well into a black and white movie.

Above is the finished product.  I used Windows Movie Maker 2.6 to do all the editing on the film.  It was a simple matter the turn the images black and white.  I couldn’t separate the sound that was on the trailer from the video so I just had it muted instead and it worked just as well.  Windows Movie maker also has a video effect called old fashioned movie or something to that effect.  By applying it to the video it takes on that old grainy, skippy, static like effect that seems to be a trade mark of old fashioned movies.  I added in title credits to use as the speech boards for old fashioned movies, they looked a little out of place to me but they work.

The hardest part was finding a song that sounded like it would match the old fashioned.  Luckily Kevin MacLeod is the best person in the whole world and had music up on his site that fit the mood of the film.  It cut off a little before the film ended but I enjoyed that part.  It makes you focus on the events happening at the end of the segment.  Also for those of you that don’t know Kevin MacLeod, he puts all of his music up at http://incompetech.com/ all of it is royalty free, under the creative commons.  I’ve used his stuff on several projects.
