DS106 Weekly Summary 1

Well the first week of DS106 bootcamp has been a crazy one. Even though there was a lot of catching up to do I think I have finally got a pretty good grasp on what this class is going to be all about! It sort of came as a surprise that some of these basic assignments were so difficult, especially given that I’m from this “social media generation”.
But enough ranting and on to the part that really matters: nuggets. My first “nugget” that came to me was in the Steven Johnson clip. The entire idea behind the video (from what I understood) was a justification of both new media sites as well as the spread of ideas on a new platform. After watching the video I found the (possibly accidental) under lying meaning to be very interesting. For me this was a meaning of showing the internet and all of its platforms as a way to not just grow ideas but combine others to create a whole new understanding of just about anything. Whatever this idea shaping took form in, it was really interesting to stand back and look at this awe inspiring, man made venue in which time and place can no longer hinder both idea sharing and the creation of new ones.
The last two “nuggets” came from Kelli Anderson speech. The first thing she mentioned which struck a cord with me was her yearning for all listeners to no longer confine themselves to the socially constructed “creativity norms”. By encouraging us to color outside the lines, and not longer see projects/life in one angle I was able to translate this to our DS106 class. From here until the end of the semester I will remind myself to look at each assignment, task, and blog from a new angle. And the last “nugget” I got out of the Anderson speech was inspired from her vigilante newspaper. Though I do not see myself creating any federal offenses in my near future I had to admire her gusto for both the spread of creativity and hope throughout a city. For me this stood out in that she really proved that inorder to create the spreading of positivity, you can not always wait for someone to give you an invitation but rather it is necessary to take action ourselves.

DAILY CREATES!

Just started my first one today (may regret not jumping on board sooner) and it was fun! I loved other peoples from the previous days and even todays, these are definetly something I will be looking forward to in the future. And just incase we can’t get enough of my mindless rambling, punny jokes and quick wit (more to come of course) here are my:

Sleeping Mouse

pages. Now to attempt my new twitter savvy skills and more importantly my newly learned embedding talent! As another intro here is a tweet of my first daily create!

And to finish the business side of this here is a short introduction (again, more to come) of who I am and what my blog will try to accomplish!

To wrap up this rather lengthy post I want to finish with a short reflection on the craziness that was the beginning of DS106. Though I am turning this assignment in 20 minutes shy of the deadline I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Though rushed and a bit bumpy this first learning curve was exhilarating. I learned new things not just about social media and how to embed, link, post ect, but that there may be a few more things I have to learn before I can really go talking about how out of date my father’s knowledge of computers actually is. Though I may be blinded by the pounding waves of excitement I must admit I am nervous about the formatting of this class. I consider myself to be an excellent student but my learning has always been in a physical forum, never a virtual one. This being said I am looking forward to both the challenges and new experiences this class is going to force me into, and I could not be more excited for the amount of writing I think DS106 has in store for me! No questions for now but there will be more than everyone can handle later down the road I’m sure.

Until next week,

Chelsea
