Sew I hosted the ds106 show…

I was a ds106 guinea pig of sorts this week, that is that this week was the first week that students co-hosted the ds106 show with cogdog, and I, along with Miss Amber May were the first student co-hosts. It was also the first week that the show was done exclusively using audio through Skype, which I had never actually used before.

Having virtually attended all other ds106 shows this semester, I had an idea of what to expect, but as usual, the unexpected happened.

Miss Amber May and I were joined on the show by not only cogdog but by Daniel Zimmerman, a former ds106 student who is helping out with the ds106 subreddit and Grant Potter, the creator of ds106 radio.

Amber and I talked about how we had been doing with assignments for the class and what we thought of it so far. I mentioned that I initially struggled with the Story Shape assignment from last week, and was reassured by Karissa that I was not the only one who struggled with it.

We also talked about digital storytelling and tried to answer the question of ‘what is storytelling?’ with our guests.

Grant Potter talked about the updates he made to the station recently and how it has improved since he created it. He talked about what the station has become and where it is heading. He, along with cogdog and Daniel eventually ended up talking in depth about some of the technical inner workings of ds106 radio, which greatly confused me but I was reassured by cogdog that I did not need to know all of the technicalities of the radio station in order to do work for the class. The conversation was interrupted by a fire drill in the UMW Apartments where Amber lives, causing her to miss the last few minutes of the show but overall the show was a hit, or so I think.

Speaking of the unexpected, we were joined on twitter by Talky Tina, a character from a popular episode of The Twilight Zone. I am not exactly sure how Talky Tina came into existence relative to the ds106 radio show, but she proceeded to add some mystery and creepiness to all of us involved in the show.

Thankfully, people loved the show, even those who could not listen to it live on air, including Kelsie.

If you missed it, you can listen to it here, archived by cogdog in all of its glory.
