Final Worst Date Ever

So this is the link to my final portion of the class radio show, The Worst Date Ever. I had a ton of fun creating this piece and I thought the topic of Dating was a great choice because there are so many different things to cover under that theme. It was broad enough to allow people to incorporate whatever they wanted, and while we all have experience with the topic, everyone’s piece seemed to be unique because we’ve all experienced it differently. I’m really excited to hear how it all comes together.

Courtney and Me

The idea for this is that one of my best friends, Courtney, went on this really awful date at the end of high school with a guy named Erik, who happened to become friends with Samantha here at U of M. And by awful, I just mean that the poor guy couldn’t catch a break – everything that could have gone wrong did. While Erik is known for telling the story because he’s still trying to live it down, Courtney only talks about it when people ask to hear her side of it after hearing Erik’s. So I had actually never heard the story until I met Sam sophomore year, and she heard I was friends with Courtney and told me I had to ask about it. But now I know the story pretty well, and I love hearing it over and over… it never gets old.

So I sat Courtney down in my apartment and had her tell the story, which is why her interview is pretty quiet and you can hear everything. Sam interviewed Erik at the bar to ease the pain, so his half has a little more background noise to it. We decided not to change that or add any music because we thought it was a good idea to be able to recognize a transition or switch between the two sides of the story, as we flipped back and forth frequently. Then one night we sat down together and edited. We cut a lot of the interview out because some parts were irrelevant or didn’t really add to the story, and Erik’s interview was something like 11 minutes long, so it definitely took a lot of work to get just the core of the story into one track. While I had a lot of fun making the audio clip, it’s definitely a little harder to work together when you start to combine the interviews, because we can only use one computer. So it doesn’t actually make it any easier to work together, but it’s definitely a lot more fun.

Overall, I think our segment is pretty funny and also a little informative. Sam and I agree that Erik “nailed the coffin shut” (as he says) when he didn’t walk up to Courtney’s door and instead texted her he was there. It’s all about picking us up at the door.
