YouTube would be a chaotic and hectic mess if the movies weren’t divided into genres, or categories.  Ds106 is attempting to create genres for the videos of YouTube in a google document.  So far, there are 20 genres and counting, including animation, computer art, mash-ups, and parodies.

Honestly, I think some of these categories are silly.  If anything, most of them should be sub-categories underneath already created genres.  Such as “Kids with accents” and “Strange and Adorable Children”.  They could be grouped together to avoid repetition and unnecessary categories.  Both examples found under these categories involve children which are adorable and/or strange: Charlie Bit My Finger and Kittens Inspired by Kittens.

I think people are just trying to be creative and get credit for the assignment by creating a new genre, when it already exists.  Just add another example under the genre that’s already there!
