A Snowshoe Christmas : This is a memoir Christmas story by me with a painting by my sister Cheryl Renee Long just published in an online literary journal called Setting Forth.

Remembering a Christmas Long Ago

I remember hanging stockings on the mantelpiece over the fireplace every Christmas Eve when I was a kid–six of my dad’s big wool hiking socks in a row. We all put something small in each other’s stockings, but Santa always surprised us with the orange in the toe, the Brazil nuts, the filled chocolates, and a special just-for-me gift.

Stockings first before breakfast followed by the Unwrappathon. Sometimes Santa hid gifts like bikes and instead set us a series of clues that kept us treasure hunting from one end of the house to the other.

I did this collage as a reflection from my increasingly more golden years back to a time both long long ago and as near in memory as yesterday.

I’m just a Lollipop of the Gods

Daily Create was to express the concept of being an “outsider” as in “outsider art” as in “art not officially recognized.” I looked this up. “Outsider art” is so cool that it is “a thing” and “officially” recognized, which means anybody can see it’s cool and “officially” put it in a gallery or show. Therefore, it’s really no longer “outside,” is it?

Romeo “denies his stars,” but they get him in the end anyway. Odysseus is a plaything of the gods. The cleverest man in the world can’t get home without their help.

In this image, I am taking a selfie, totally self absorbed as a god annihilates me with no more consequence than if I were a child’s sweet.

This is not about belief or atheism. Neither matters. We are caught in the vast machinery of the earth and stars, and we are of consequence only to ourselves.

Ah, the nihilists! Ah, the existentialists! What have they done for us lately?

Christmas 2015. There’s Peter putting the angel on the tree. Then a Fauvist vision of the tree, and then a mysteriousnightvision.com drawing I did of it for today’s Daily Create, which asked us to draw and name a tree in our neighborhood. This Tree is definitely in my neighborhood!

Lights Through the Steam
The Daily Create was great challenge involving a glass plate, a bowl of candy and a golf tee, none of which I had on hand. So I invented my own version of photographing through water droplets.

It involved taking a hot tub first in order to steam up the windows in the hot tub room (for art, of course!). Then some fun shooting through glass ceilings and windows💧💧💧

I’m sorry there’s only one season left after a 14 year run.

Pieta of the Stars

Today’s Daily Create was to remove something from a photograph that would result in something startling. I removed Christ’s body and replaced the void with galactic stars to show He had “ascended unto the heavens.”

Daily Create was to put something on your head that clearly doesn’t belong there, but scary how natural the Cheshire Cat looks as headpiece. Didn’t see that comin’!

“The Tower shows a tall tower pitched atop a craggy mountain. Lightning strikes and flames burst from the building’s windows.

People are seen to be leaping from the tower in desperation, wanting to flee such destruction and turmoil.

The Tower signifies darkness and destruction on a physical scale, as opposed to a spiritual scale. The Tower itself represents ambitions built on false premises.

The lightning bolt breaks down existing forms in order to make room for new ones. It represents a sudden, momentary glimpse of truth, a flash of inspiration that breaks down structures of ignorance and false reasoning.

Notice the lightning bolt is oriented left to right (from the perspective of the card), from heaven to earth, and from Spirit to material.

The falling figures correspond to the chained prisoners in the Devil card. They fall headfirst, because the sudden influx of spiritual consciousness represented by the lightning flash completely upsets all our old notions about the relations between subconsciousness and self-consciousness.”
