More spiders, because who doesn’t love spiders?

    by
Hey now, stop shrieking.  Put down the blowtorch!  You do not need to take an ax to your computer screen.  It’s *just* spiders. Feel free to take a few minutes to laugh at Superwoman’s skit about being scared of spiders, here. OK, now take some deep breaths people!  How am I supposed to deprogram your … Continue reading "More spiders, because who doesn’t love spiders?"

    The Prehistory of Comics

    by
Where to Start Before You Start Santiago Garcia points out in his great book of comics history and criticism, On the Graphic Novel, that people tend to trace the beginning of comic books back to an individual moment, usually either Rodolphe Töpffer’s histoires de estampes in the 19th century or to the massively popular, serialized comic […]

    Reading Plan for Fall 2017

    by
This past 5 or 6 weeks, I have read approximately 65 books. Some of them have been picture books and elementary readers and some have been children’s novels or YA nonfiction books. I have kept a very accurate record of my reading on my Goodreads account and I just recently took on the Goodreads 2017... Continue Reading →

New Publication: “Messing with the Attractiveness Algorithm: a Response to Queering Code/Space”

    by

I am utterly pumped to share the pre-print for my article, “Messing with the Attractiveness Algorithm: a Response to Queering Code/Space.” This piece will be part of a 2018 special issue “Queering Code/Space,” edited by  Daniel Cockayne and Lizzy Richardson for Gender, Place and Culture. I’ve only loading this piece to Socarxiv for open access. I was honored to be asked to be a part of this special issue, a follow-up to Dan and Lizzy’s “Queering Code/Space” session at the 2016 AAG in San Francisco. The pieces in the rest of the issue by the editors, Olu Jenzen, Sam Miles, and Carl Bonner-Thompson are great contributions to thinking about the imbrication of queer lives and spaces and the production of code/space. Along with my response to those pieces, I incorporated a failure I have seen in code for over a decade now. Lacking actual access to the vast archives …

    The Best Comics of 2016

    by
For me, it was tough figuring out where to start reading the best comics of 2016, where to even start looking for them. I had heard of the Eisner Awards, but I didn’t think to look there because what I knew of the Eisners mostly featured mainstream action and superhero comics. I was looking for […]

    Learning from Others – PLN

Photo CC – By: Pavlina Rupova A PLN or a personal learning network is “making connections and building personal relationships with teachers, school administrators, university professors, and experts around the world”. That is according to the 9 step article by Teacher Challenges I read about personal learning networks. I took the teacher approach as I … Continue reading Learning from Others – PLN
