    DS106 Radio

    by
I had a hard time finding time to actually log in and listen to a live broadcast but I finally did it. I honestly didn’t think I would love it but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Here are my tweets on I made as I was listening to the live ...

    Lucy and the Bike Girl

    by
This  was a short story written and produced by Hillary Frank, made by combining fictional narration with real interview tape. It was edited by Julie Snyder, and orginally aired on This American Life. First off, I loved how this story was narrated from someone else’s point of view (narrated story). The sound effects were  very handy. Having ...

    The Live Experience

    by
So, I’ve tuned in to ds106 radio a few times before, but never for quite as long as I did today. Okay, so honestly, last time I listened, it was because my husband had turned it on from his laptop, and I overheard it.    It was pretty timely, too.  He and I had just ...

    Ira Glass and Jad Abumrad

    by
Ira Glass is the guru of radio sound effects so it was amazing to hear his advice on how to make the radio come alive. He mentions how anecdotes are like the events/scenes we would see in a movie so in order to create these scenic images in ones head ANECDOTES were necessary. He also ...

    DS106 Radio Show Experience

    by
I’ve never really thought about the mechanics of radio broadcasting until now. It’s really amazing how all of these sounds of music, stories, and other information can be streamlined to be heard everywhere by the radio. The whole DS106 class and other people involved with the DS106 radio can hear all live media from each other directly via the radio. While I was listening to the radio, I heard I song I just heard and liked (The Roots – You Got Me), and the sound of someone’s bird whistling a tune. @bsawhill I’m listening to you on @ds106radio ! Pretty bird! — Chris Kim (@thechr1skim) September 24, 2012 Other than ...

    Bringing the Ghost to Life

    by
As I mentioned in a recent post, I recently listened to my first episode of This American Life – specifically, the story of a little 4-year-old boy who went missing in a Louisiana swamp in 1912 named Bobby Dunbar. As instructed by my professors in my super-awesome online class, ds106, I listened to the story ...

Dagnet the 50?s Radio Show! Ep 02: Homicide

    by
The first thing the radio show says is that the story is based on a true crime story, which incites a kind of excitement to the story. I remember when I would watch horror movies, they were much scarier when they are “based on a true story.” I would assume this is the same technique. Also, the story isn’t narrated like an anecdote but rather like a play or a T.V. show. The radio show has voice actors and theme songs between parts of the story. Sound effects are also used, for footsteps and door-knocking. The main character of the radio show is a police detective, who narrates the story ...

    Summary on Audio Storytelling

    by
Ira Glass speaks about the two building blocks of telling a story to an audience. An anecdote, or telling a direct sequence of events can be used to bring in the audience’s attention. The anecdote builds suspense by presenting a question to the audience, and that goes into the second phase, which is to constantly present questions within the story and tell the audience the answer. Glass also talks about the kind of stories one would present, that as an amateur, making mistakes and bad takes are part of the learning experience. Much of good radio talking is luck, and that the more one attempts at it, the more chance ...
