    Radio Show Week 1

    by
So this week my group members and I outlined our ideas for our radio show and got some promotional work done for it. We decided to incorporate the theme of the class, secret agents, by talking about spies, real and fictional. Our show is called &#8220...

    DS106 Phone Call

    by
This was the last assignment I completed for the 10 stars required in Audio Assignments for the week. This one required me to tell a story, basically pretend I was making a phone call, and add background noise to make it more realistic. I decided to incorporate my secret agent, Margo, into this assignment. I scripted it so that Margo was leaving Moscow to fly back to London with top-secret information she acquired in Russia. She makes an off-handed comment about how the weather was bad and that she would make an arrangement with a man named Thomas to pass along the information. I ended the call with Margo having to board her plane. To signal this, I inserted the background noise of a stewardess announcing it was time to board the plane. To complete the assignment, I recorded myself as Margo through the Voice Memo app on my phone and then uploaded it to my computer and transferred it to Audacity. I got the background noise of the airport from freesounds.org and uploaded the recording to Audacity. The assignment was relatively is to complete, it just required some creativty.

    DS106 Radio Commerical

    by
This assignment served a couple of purposes the week. I used it first as part of the 10 stars required this week in Audio Assignments and also as a possible commercial for my group’s radio show next week. Creating the commercial was really easy. I recorded myself talking into the Voice Memo app on my iPhone and then uploaded the recording to my computer where I transferred it to Audacity. I also used the Voice Memo app to record some music to play as the intro and end of the commercial. The commercial focuses on my group’s radio show theme: spies and reality or fiction and is designed as means to make people interested in tuning in to listening next week!

    Sound Track Mashup

    by
For this assignment, I was instructed to take two songs and do a mashup of them. Then I was supposed to compare the differences among the songs such as instruments, changes in volume, etc. Instead of only doing two songs, I decided to pick four. These four are important because I picked one song from each of my group members selected movie for our Radio Show project. For my movie Atomic Blonde I chose David Bowie’s Cat People (Putting out the Fire). Lauren chose the Nancy Drew movie so I used Come to California by Matthew Sweet. Hannah chose Salt, Evelyn Salt so I picked the Escaping the CIA song from James Newton Howard’s soundtrack. Finally, Tiffany chose Mr. and Mrs. Smith so I picked the song Mondo Bongo by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. One thing I noticed with the songs from these different movie soundtracks were the mood of the songs. The songs I chose from Nancy Drew and Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both upbeat songs that are catchy. These movies are also funnier spy movies, unlike the other two I chose. The songs from Atomic Blonde and Salt are more instrumental or slow-moving songs. These movies are more serious spy movies. This assignment showed me the importance of a soundtrack in displaying the theme of a movie or tv show. These four movies all chose songs representative of their theme and it adds a lot to the experience of watching them.

    Destination Post Card

    by
This is my last assignment for the Design Assignments this week! This assignment required me to make a postcard. I decided to use a picture of the Scottish Highlands because I went there for Christmas this past year and absolutely loved it. I again used Canva for this assignment since I’m still learning graphic design and this website is really helpful! I found the picture on Google and then uploaded it to Canva, then I added the text and I had my postcard! Super easy and fun assignment. I have to say, the design assignments have been my favorite so far this semester.

    Contradiction Creation

    by
This assignment required me to create a “contradiction creation.” I simply had to make a design with an image accompanied by a text that is the opposite of the image. I decided to choose a picture of a landfill with the text “it’s a beautiful world.” I thought this would definitely be contradicting. To make the design, I again used Canva. I searched for a picture of a landfill on the website, inserted it into my template, and then added the text! Easy and fun assignment!

    Charity Ad

    by
This assignment required me to create an ad for a charity, made up or real, to encourage someone to donate. I chose the non-profit, Kiva. Kiva isn’t a charity in the traditional way. Kiva is a microloan lending nonprofit that allows someone to loan any amount of money to someone anywhere in the world. The people requesting loans on Kiva are typically doing so to start a business, help make their current business grow, buy more resources for their farm, etc. Kiva is exceptionally awesome because it directly empowers people in developing countries. I loaned $25 to a woman in Nigeria who wanted money to buy new farming tools and seeds for her garden so she could feed her children and sell her surplus at a market! The great thing about Kiva is that it is a loan program, not a grant. People are held accountable to repay their loans and there is incredible repayment rate. Once your loan is repaid, you are given the option to loan some or all of it back out to someone else on the website in need, rather than transferring the money back into your own account. To make the poster, I again used Canva. I searched for a rural village image since I think Kiva is most beneficial to people living in rural, developing regions of the world. I then used the text setting to add the name Kiva and the company’s slogan. If you’re thinking of donating your tax returns this year, I definitely suggest looking into Kiva!

    Minimalist Movie Poster

    by
For this assignment, I had to make a movie or tv poster in a minimalist way. I decided to do one for the movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The movie is definitely a tear-jerker, but one of my favorites. The assignment was linked in this week’s “weekly assignment” blog so I thought I’d give it a go! It was a pretty easy assignment overall, but it required you to think. I chose a picture of a DVD because in the movie the main character, Greg, and his best friend, Earl, make their own versions of classic or foreign movies. When Rachel, the dying girl, gets diagnosed with cancer, they begin to make movies for her- hence the DVD in my poster. I was originally going to use a picture of all the movies that Greg and Earl made, but after looking at other examples from people who had already done the assignment, I realized that picture wouldn’t meet the minimalist requirement. I used Canva to make the movie poster. I would definitely suggest this site to graphic design beginners! There are so many tools and cool designs on there, and it makes the process REALLY easy and fun! I selected the poster template and then selected a grey background. I put in my own text and cropped it the way it looks now. When I chose the DVD image, it was red and orange, but I felt like the best way to keep with the minimalist theme was to keep the colors neutral. The great thing about Canva is that you can change the colors of images you want to add to your design. I would definitely suggest this assignment to other students in the class! Don’t forget to check out my Instagram post about it as well!

    Visual Assignment: Places of Peace

    by
This assignment required me to make a collage of pictures that represent peaceful moments to me. However, I decided to make a collage based on peaceful moments for my secret agent character, Margo Humphrey, or Sidney. Since she is from England, London would be a peaceful place for her to visit. I decided to include a picture of Big Ben I took a few years ago when I was visiting there. I also included a picture of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Since Margo is a double agent for Britain and Russia, Paris is a relaxing place for her to find moments of peace during her stressful life. I also included a picture of a cappuccino because who doesn’t love coffee?! And lastly, a picture of Ozzy, who in this case could just be a cat that Margo owns. However, it was an adorable picture I couldn’t not include. If my cat brings me peace then so does Margo’s I made this collage from a collage app I downloaded to my phone. Just selected some pictures already on my camera roll and then uploaded it to this post! This is my last assignment for the Visual Assignment component of the week and it was another easy one!

Visual Assignment: Create a Silly Movie Poster

    by
This assignment required me to take a movie poster and make it look silly. I used the graphic-design website Canva to upload a picture of the movie poster I downloaded from Google Images and then insert all the illustrations! I chose the Grand Budapest Hotel because I recently saw it for the first time over winter break and really enjoyed it! Plus I think the movie poster is really pretty. Another easy 4 star assignment!

    Photoblitz

    by
http://johnjohnston.info/photoblitzer/  start time: 4:57 http://johnjohnston.info/photoblitzer/ end time: 5:07 This photo blitz required me to do a variety of different photographic activities. For the most part, they were all relatively easy. A picture of the grass outside of my backdoor, a close up of a little fake Christmas tree my mom gave me, a cool pair of pants I bought a couple of months ago, a picture of J.K. Rowling smiling from a 2018 calendar that is still up in my kitchen, an angle from the floor of part of my living room, and my favorite color- purple. The only picture I had difficulty with was taking a photograph of something “rusted or crusted.” I’m not sure I did this one correctly, but it was the only thing I could think of. I just took a picture of a dead plant I have been meaning to throw out. However, I could argue that I made it beautiful because plants and flowers, when alive, are beautiful. This photo blitz assignment was also fun! It was exciting to have to quickly take a picture to match each category with a time limit.

    Still Shots: Atomic Blonde

    by
All of these photographs are taken from the secret agent movie Atomic Blonde (2017). Each photo represents a different category from the list of ways a photo has a narrative or tells a story. I got all of them from a website that had hundreds of snapshots from the movie. After reading the details for each category, it was not difficult to find pictures that matched each description. It also gave me a better understanding of the different possible ways to approach taking a photo. It was a fun exercise to dive deeper into the method of photography!
