    Ds 106 Poster/Ad

    by
Our radio show is obviously going to be about autumn and “everything nice.” I first googled autumn trees and found the background and decided I had to involve pumpkin spice in there some where. Then, for my ad/poster, I pretty … Continue reading

    Playtime

    by
When I did the photoblitz I chose my cat and dog playing for two things that don’t belong together. In reality, the oddly love each other and play all the time. This the camera roll that I got from just snapping pictures of them together. Just thought I’d share the cuteness

    DesignBlitz

    by
It took me a few days to ponder about the designblitz. I had to first think about which elements I wanted to do and if I could do them effectively (or ineffectively to prove a point). I first started by reading the assignment document and looking at a few examples. However, the examples didn’t really ...

    THIS Is What I Do

    by
Chugging along the DS106 Design week, I created the lovely “What people think I do” meme. Staying true to the Emergency Medical Services, I created this: Okay, so I cheaped out and used a meme generator that was given on the Assignment page. I originally was going to make my own…until I went to the page for reference and realized they had a link to the site where you placed your photos and wrote your text and it placed it! Sure, this would have been a quick create in GIMP, but why pass up an opportunity to just drop in some photos and have the computer do the work…that’s why … Continue reading

    Five Points!

    by
I was curious last week to see how many of my ds106 students were doing their part to stay tuned to the class hash tag (or me) in twitter. What better way than a POP QUIZ? Testing if my UMW #ds106 students are listening in twitter. Particpation Quiz can get you EXTRA CREDIT POINTS docs.google.com/spreadsheet/vi… — Alan Levine (@cogdog) September 26, 2012 I got 15 responses, 12 of whom where in my class, which is just a shade over half. That’s pretty good, or is it? They got a whole 5 points of freaking EXTRA CREDIT. The quiz was really silly and the equivalent of a hand raise in class: I asked their twitter handle (so I could match them to my students). I did ask a data chartable multiple choice item: What ways have you used twitter since class started? And probably has no significance at all, beyond the ...

    Bridges

    by
I did the letters in your surrounding assignment this week “Create your name from objects in your environment. Use either Creative Commons images, ones of your own, or a combination of both to find the letters of your name hidden in your surroundings. ” For this assignment I decided to give myself a theme: Bridges. I really enjoy traveling and I think this photo portrays that, I’ve actually seen at least on of these bridges, maybe more. I used photos of bridges I found through a search on the creative commons site, saved them to my computer, opened them in powerpoint and then took a screenshot of the photos lined up. This probably … Continue reading →

    All Things Must Change

    by
A design assignment I really liked was Design the Cover of Your Autobiography “Design the cover of your autobiography. What pictures would you include? What would you title it? “ My autobiography would be titled “All Things Must Change” and the cover picture is a photo of changing leaves in the fall that I found through the creative commons site. I like that the photo is focused in front and blurry in the back, which to me symbolizes not knowing what’s coming next. My autobiography would be a story of change. In the past few years my life has completely changed in ways I did and didn’t expect, and I … Continue reading →

    Switch It Up

    by
Lightswitch Art “Create a work of art that incorporates the switch into the art.” I think of light switch art as something you would see in a child’s room, after that thought I remembered the Daily Create last week where we had to draw our favorite animal, I drew an Elephant, which was more difficult than I thought it would be. So, for this project I decided to look up how to draw a cartoon elephant. I think it turned out well, It would look great in a zoo themed child’s room.

    What Pre-Vet Students do…

    by
I have always loved the “What I think I do” memes. They have always made me laugh. I even find myself relating to them sometimes. I loved the idea of creating your own. I decided to do a Pre-Vet student from my point of view. There are ones of med students, Veterinarians, and doctors, but ...

    Zombified

    by
As I was searching through the Design Assignment Repository,  I cam across one that looked a bit gruesome. It’s not my normal taste, but in honor of the upcoming Halloween celebrations I decided to do it. You take a picture, then zombify yourself. I looked at some of the examples and wasn’t thrilled with it ...

On Audio Storytelling with Bryan Alexander

    by
cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog I’m fortunate to be visiting the Vermont mountain home (enclave) of Bryan Alexander author of what I call the bible for this class, The New Digital Storytelling. Besides taking walks in the woods, building rock walls, watching sci fi and The Wire with his family, talking bout the demise of education… we sat down last night for a small bit of free form talk about storytelling for ds106radio. Talking Storytelling with Bryan Alexander For my students embarking on their radio show projects, I nudged a few questions that ought to help them plan how to do something that is more drama-like (yay) and less droll book reportish. We delved into some speculating on why audio stories are effective and other things in his radar. Again, if you are in my UMW class of ds106… (ahem) this ought to be useful. ...

    Designing for the Radio

    by
I’m excited to start off this week with an assignment that is using our radio shows, but is visual. It seems kind of ironic to me. Our group radio show is going to be about a family road trip. For some reason this is pretty much the exact picture that popped into my head when ...

    Comet, Cupid, Donner, PhotoBlitzen!

    by
Daniel Zimmerman and I decided to do the photoblitz at the same time. We did it in our basement here at Payne Street. It’s pretty wide open, plus we have the upstairs here at the house, which we made good use of. I really like the photoblitz because for one it is time limited: you ...
