This week we were introduced to using audio media to tell a story.  At the beginning we were instructed to watch videos about storytelling through the radio and then write a blog about it.  Both Ira Glass and Radiolab‘s Jad Abumrad  brought … Continue reading

Today, on this beautiful sunday afternoon just before football got started, I began listening to #ds106radio!  Our awesome professor, Alan Levine (a.k.a. Cog Dog) was DJing this morning, and we had a brief conversation via the air waves and twitterverse … Continue reading

    Bump it Up (DS106 Radio)

    by
My DS106 Radio bumper, this took me a while to even figure out what I was going to do. I listened to a lot of the ones which other ds106ers posted and got some ideas from that. I ended up just taking a song from iTunes  and recorded myself saying the DS106 Radio part. I had some fun with the the effects though it was pretty hard getting it to have the effect I wanted. I used Audacity but am a virgin to most all audio editing software so it was a lot of trial and error and I still didn’t end up with the effect I wanted. I tried everything I could … Continue reading

    Dino Attack (in Sound)

    by
This one was pretty fun, making a short audio clip telling a story in nothing but sound effects. I got all these effects from freesounds. I didn’t know what I was going to do at first but then I remembered doing the 5card draw story telling thin...

    by
Can you dig it? Can you dig it? Can you dig it? (YAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!) I tried tuning in several times this week but managed to miss all the live broadcasts but I would have to say that I did not mind listening to a hour of that great upbeat music… This last time that I tuned ...

    Symphony in Words

    by
What a strange thing to happen to a person, the lack or loss of words or language. Could you imagine if you didn’t know what to call the thing staring you in the face right now, if you didn’t know who/what/why you are? What would you call yourself, what would you call things, how would you know what was going on, how would see the world around you? In this segment of Radiolab they explore the area of Words, what they mean, how we use them, and how we relate them to each other. It was a very interesting thing and I really enjoyed listening and I would highly suggest … Continue reading

    Listening to Stories

    by
I listened to The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar which I have to say was a very interesting story. I think it was very effective to tell the story in audio because I also read it in print and the story with the music and voice dynamics really brings it to life.  The producers used music ...

    Audio Storytelling

    by
From listening to Ira Glass and Jad Abumrad I learned some key points on Audio Storytelling. Ira Glass states that the important thing is to understand the building blocks of a story.  Make it different from what you learned in high school.  There are two different building blocks the antidote (story in its purest form) ...

    Live on the Radio

    by
Listening to DS106 Radio was kind of a weird thing to do. I went on early in the week to check things out and managed to get on a page which played the broadcasts there wasn’t anything live going on at that time so I decided I’d wait till something came on. I finally saw a live broadcast going by @onepercentyello (her blog here). I figured I’d be able to just click the web site and pull up the broadcast but this wasn’t true, you have to download a file which plays (at least for me) on iTunes. I first thought that this was old broadcasts which they kept files of … Continue reading

Ira and Jad on audio storytelling: Ira and Jad had very interesting things to say about radio storytelling. Ira talks about the building blocks of stories- anecdotes and moments of reflection. TUNED IN listening to #ds106radio — Kiersten Pyrtle (@KierstenPyrtle) September 20, 2012 Unfortunately whenever I tuned into ds106 radio this week, there were no live broadcasts. I hope I will have better timing in the future. I really like how every time you begin listening to d106 radio, the first thing you hear is the ...

    DS106 Radio #4life

    by
I listened to my allotted hour of DS106 radio today. I have to say, whoever I was listening to was extremely passionate about Beyonce’s baby. I sat and listened for a good 10 minutes about Blue Ivy, and Rhianna, and all this gossip about Beyonce. I will say, I love Beyonce but I really don’t care about her personal life. Not being mean or anything, everyone is entitled to radio show about whatever they want. I just happened to be listening haha. I really like how every time I turn on DS106 radio it has that little intro piece, is the guy talking the man from School House Rock? It … Continue reading

    Goodmorning Sunshine!

    by
Like many of our ds106 assignments, I was very skeptical about the sound effect story assignment, but I ended up having a lot of fun with it! This assignment really made me feel so much more comfortable using audacity. I found all of my sound effects on freesound.org. I downloaded the sound effects in the ...

Episode 275: Two Steps Back [Listening to stories]

    by
For this assignment, I decided to listen to This American Life’s Episode 275: Two Steps Back. What a GREAT story, it pulls you in and makes you FEEL this story. The producers used raw emotions, sound effects, layering of sounds with music in the background to convey the emotion toll of this story. This story tells the frustrations of this teacher and the pain the situation causes her and the students and community. The audio kept me attentive throughout the entire hour of the story. The producers put in background-music that helped you to sympathize with this heartbroken teacher. I never noticed before how much influence background music has on … Continue reading

Can You Hear Me NOW? [audio storytelling]

    by
To start off DS106 Week 4 – Learning to Listen, we were asked to watch a series of videos (five to be exact) to get a feel of what’s expected for the week and to listen/learn from some experts about radio storytelling. The first part of first assignment was to watch a series of FOUR videos by Ira Glass, host of This American Life, a weekly radio storytelling show on National Public Radio! The First of FOUR, was about the basics of radio storytelling, and do’s and don’ts, and types/storyboards. I enjoyed this first one because it caught my attention and gave me thorough insight. He also made sure to … Continue reading

    by
I really enjoyed the ds106 radio bumper assignment! Who knew creating a radio bumper could be so fun! I loved listening to all the sound effects on freesound.org. I was constantly changing my bumper when I came across a sound I liked more. I am finally getting the hang of Audacity, I think. I really ...

Yesterday was a lazy day for me so I booted up the old laptop and lay down on my bed. ds106radio was not working for me the night before so I had low hopes and expectations. Well, it worked. I listened on and off for about three hours marveling at the artists I had never ...

I Intend To Live Forever, Or Die Trying… A Week of Audio Work!

    by
To start off DS106 Week 4 – Learning to Listen, we were asked to watch a series of videos (five to be exact) to get a feel of what’s expected for the week. You can find my blog post about these videos and my comments about audio storytelling in general, right here! (: The Summary of the radio story I listened to can be found here. I really enjoyed this task! (: My blog post about my first DS106Radio experience is posted here! Forever Alone… 1st DS106 Radio Experience :D

    by
Finally got @ds106radio set up! listening while doing my homework! #tooawesome #goodmusic #ds106 — LyndseyLu (@LyndseyLu112) September 22, 2012 This was an awesome first experience!! DS106 Radio is a great new obsession of mine! I couldn’t find an hour during the week to listen to a live broadcast because of commuting, my new job, and the fact that my grandparents are visiting whom I haven’t seen in a LONG LONG time (: BUT point being I loved the auto-DJ or whatever you want to call it, I really loved the random music to listen to during my homework time (: I tried to check the Icecast Stream status as much … Continue reading

    Imageless Movies.

    by
This week I chose to listen to 3 radio drama broadcasts from The Truth. I listened to “Eat Cake,” “Lucy and the Bike Girl,” and “That’s Democracy.”  I have never listened to audio stories other than just audio books where someone is reading verbatim from the text. This was a very interesting experience that I ...
