    Photo Essay: “My People”

    by
For this project, I decided to walk outside, look around and shoot whatever inspires me. The reason why I think that ALL of the pictures below belong under a post titled “My People”, is because they reflect something that is within me. It can be an emotion, a state of mind, a situation or even […]

    “My People”

    by

For my photo essay, "My People", I chose to do a collection of photos of the individuals in my life that mean the most to me, my family and close friends. I wanted all of the images to capture these people at their happiest or most content moments, because that is the how I envision these people when I think of them.

At first this seemed to be a daunting task, to take good pictures of people in their element without forcing them to look a certain way. It’s still amazing to me that in just over one month I could get these pictures to turn out the way I wanted them to, for the most part.

I wanted to take quality photos but because I was interested in getting spontaneous shots, I found myself switching between a Nikon and my iPhone to capture the photos. The Nikon produced higher quality photographs, but my favorite photos in the group are the ones that came from my iPhone. It just reminded me that having high quality or clarity in a photo does not necessarily mean it will always be better than a lesser quality photo that may better capture a person or idea.

As I said, I originally intended for the photos to capture “my people” at happy moments because I like to think of them like this. What I didn’t anticipate was that every photo would capture the personality of the people in them. My sister is a total goofball, and that shines through in her photos. My best friends make me laugh incessantly, and when I look at their pictures I want to laugh along with them. My dad is a very serious person, and I can see that in his photo. My grandparents are quiet and conservative, and I can see their demeanor in the picture I took of them. Even the shot of my dog is spot on, because she is always giving me inquisitive looks. I do not think these photos could do a better job of capturing the subjects exactly as I know them.

As you can see from the photos, I chose to make every image in the collection black and white. I did this for several reasons, the first of which is a little obvious: because it made the group of photos cohesive and also made some of the shots appear to be more meaningful and thought-out (when in fact, most of them were spur of the moment, and I had no idea what I’d end up with).

The second reason is that while a few of the shots were focused on the people I intended to photograph, others include some background faces or colors, which I found to be distracting. The black and white effect seems to eliminate those distractions from the photo and brought the focus back to “my people”.

Finally, the black and white filter gives the photographs a sense of nostalgia or memories, which I found to be important to my essay and what it means to me. Soon these photographs will act as more of a memory of the people I used to see on a regular basis, and I wanted them to always reflect that idea.

This project forced me to create a collection of photos based on however I interpret the given title. For me, the title meant exactly what it says, and I liked that it gave me a reason to take these pictures of the people that I value the most in my life.

The essay is something I can take with me into my future as reminder of how lucky I am to be surrounded by such amazing, inspiring, and happy people. In less than two weeks from now I will be packing up my life in Ann Arbor and leaving U of M behind, and in less than a month from now I will be packing up my life at home and moving to Madison, Wisconsin.

These people, currently playing such important roles in my everyday life, will no longer be the faces I see on a regular basis. This assignment has been a special opportunity for me to capture the moments that I will want to remember when I am no longer surrounded by “my people”.

The photos that ensue are a compilation of people I love, things I know, events I attend and instances I capture. They are the result of smiling, squatting, snuggling, and snapping. These are, in their best-represented form, my people.

[[ please click on each picture to make it larger - it greatly enhances the experience]]

My people are creators. They are activists, artists, historians, environmentalists, critics and more, but above all, they create. From stir-fry dinners to activist campaigns, from dish-washing procedures to engaging events, from kitchen dance-offs to trips around the world, they will be creating the spaces in between and the ends at which they meet. Their most redeeming quality is their warmth; their love and their affection, their radiance and strength. In knowing all this, in representing them in the light they deserve, I give you their spirit.

One of the most important things I decided about this project was that I wanted to make it warm. Upon hearing the prompt, I knew that I wanted to take pictures of the people most important to me, because they are, indeed, mypeople. The second important aspect of my project is the bedroom. What is a better way to represent and express yourself than through your room? Room arrangements and designs are the most important, communicative and raw expressions of individuality. Rooms are where we spend some of the most important time in the world – sleeping. In capturing my people in their most uninhibited states, I was able to show these feelings and hopefully communicate with the audience an inside look at my people.

I loved taking pictures of the various people you see. I tried to have no overhead lighting in any of my shots. I wanted each photo to have warm reds, oranges and yellows, because I felt that represented the theme very well. For this reason, I only wanted small desktop lights to light the rooms of my housemates (my people, if you will). It ended up working pretty well, and every shot (with the right adjustments) turned out just about how I wanted it. Taking the pictures wasn’t exactly the hard part. After learning about the rule of thirds in class, as well as negative space and composition choices like conflict within a frame, I felt I was pretty prepared to take on the challenge of capturing “my people”.

The hard part for me was editing my photos. Nothing drastic, as you can see – just some stylistic choices like contrast change, de-saturation, and grayscale. I wanted my photos to seem soft, almost used and old. For this, I lowered the contrast. This made the darks fade to a lighter, more gray color, which added a softness to the photo without completely changing the color scheme of each photo.

I also wanted my colors to seem palette-like. Quick sidetrack, but I love Wes Anderson movies. My favorite thing about his movies is his color choice. Colors are pale but persistent, exuberant but mellow. These poppy colors are some of my favorite things in movies, and I tried hard to have this same, palette-like sense to my pictures. I wanted these smooth colors to reflect the warmth within my people.

This photography project taught me so much. I loved taking pictures of people I know and capturing what they mean to me through photographs. Capturing, composing and editing pictures is something I’ve always loved to do. Most of all, I’m glad this class has been such a great creative output. Even beyond that, this class as a whole has helped me express my interest in digital art, as well as explore the various fields of digital storytelling. This photography project, probably one of my favorites so far, is an excellent way to sign off. Until next time, UMDSt.

My people. I took the theme of my people to be that my people…

    by

My people. I took the theme of my people to be that my people are the people that I share similar interests and actions to. We appreciate similar things even if I don’t personally know these people.

The first picture is of Angell Hall which is by far my favorite building on campus. This building contained “my people” this year. It was where I had my Screen Arts and Culture classes this year and the meeting place for DORAK, a club I belong to. I often sit on the steps and people watch similar to the people you see in the picture

The second picture is my favorite type of weather. I like walking out in rain storms and I consider my people those who enjoy it too. Rainy days aren’t most people’s favorite kind of day, but they are mine.

The following picture was from game day. I really like this picture because it was taken near the very end of the game when points were close and people weren’t sure who was going to win. My people are people who are out late at night. My people are are also people who are concerned with the University of Michigan.

The fourth picture was taken at the musical “Pirates of Penzance.” My people are people who enjoy watching stories be it musicals or television. In this particular show two of my friends are actors.

My people play video games. This was taken at Kgrams event. This particular game was one of my favorites when I was a kid. My people don’t necessarily have to be alive/real people.

The following photo is also about playing video games but in a different way. My people are people who both like things and demonstrate their affection for them. These people play or have played Mario Kart and liked it enough to create a real life version of it.

My seventh photo is of my roommates and one of their friends working in our dorm room. My people don’t always have to be doing something special, sometimes my people just want to sit on their computer or talk like normal people.

The following photo represents how sometimes my people don’t always act like normal people. If you missed it the guy on the far left is a real person posing in the window with the mannequin. My people are the people who like to do odd things with their life.

The 9th photo is another way in which my people like to do odd things with their day. My friend Devin and I decided we wanted to climb the roof of a school so we did. Looking over the edge was something we wanted to do so we did it. Not the average Saturday.

The 10th and final picture is my friend Jo going down a path. I felt this was a good final piece as it seem to have closure to it, it looks like a final scene. In this particular scene my people are people who don’t venture into nature often and get lost on North Campus. We did eventually find where we were going but this was the moment that we actually found the building after wander around for a while. We finally found our way again.

In an attempt to make all the picture go together I set them up as “scenes” rather than portraits. These were also shots from real life so they have a story with them rather than being posed pictures in a studio.

    Order vs. Chaos (Conflict Assignment)

Our assignment was to portray the same conflict in three totally different ways. I’m mostly keeping to my goal of not manipulating images aside from resize. The only non-resize manipulation on this set was perking up the color on the yellow image.
